The countdown is over. See the newest post in this thread for his final career numbers.
Thanks again, Perry! Goodbye and good luck to you!

CORPUSJAYHAWK's ORIGINAL POST: Time to start the Perry countdown
================================================================
Perry has been criticized on this board quite a bit over the last 4 years. No one more than me. But aside from that, we all agree wholeheartedly that Perry is a stellar representative for KU, a fine young man, and as it turns out, an great college basketball player. He is in the hunt for rarified air in that he could become only the 6th player to finish in the top 12 at KU in both rebounding and scoring. He currently ranks 13th in scoring and will move to 12th, passing Clyde Lovellette with his next 38 rebounds. He needs 75 to pass Robisch and Pollard for 10th all time. That would require him to get about 7 rebounds per game. He is currently 15th in scoring and will pass Tyshawn Taylor tonight most likely. He needs 6 points to pass Taylor. He needs 182 to move into 10th passing, Simien, Randall, Pritchard and Hinrich. This young man deserves a very adoring welcome on senior night. Personally I am hoping he has a strong finish and easily finishes in the top 10 of each. He would be only the 4th to finish in the top 10 of both categories.
================================================================

[Editor's note: I will update the original SUBJECT text after each game to reflect games left. SITREPS on his progress will be provided as new posts in this thread. Thanks for starting this, Corpus! - HE}

So well put. And also a bit sad, just in the sense of not wanting it to end.

In an era of one and dones, the UK NBA D-league program, and so forth, it's easy to be very cynical about the use of the term "student athlete" (so often pooh-poohed now by a cynical media, and in some ways rightly so). But in Perry's case, the shoe fits. Indeed, if ever there was a shining poster child for the concept of a student athlete--and someone who just goes about his business day after day, month after month, season after season, quietly performing at a high level while doing great in the classroom--it's Perry Ellis.

He is a CLASS ACT and another in a long line of exemplary young men to wear the crimson and blue with pride, and to represent it with utmost dignity.

Hats off to Perry. And may he finish super strong, contributing mightily to the ultimate crowning achievement (no pun intended!) for his time in our program. April 4th, baby. Soar, Perry!

“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”

The way I figure it, KU has at least 8 games left this time around, but if all goes well and KU can win its next 15 games, Perry should have plenty of opportunity to hit the Top 10 in both categories!

But not to look *too* far ahead -- Ride those Cowboys off the range with your hot shooting tonight, Perry E!

...for Perry and how I feel about him as a Jayhawk.

He has given us every ounce of himself for four solid years. Such a great person and representative of our school and state.

Heck, even the Grape fans mustered a clap for him after the injury. If that's not telling about what a class act he is, and how he's seen by others (including those who don't like KU at all), I don't know what is.

Hats off, young man!

Day in and day out he has been a great representative of KU on and off the court.

I really hope he's okay, and that he comes back next week on fire both scoring and rebounding. I would love to see him make Top 10 in both KU categories.

CorpusJayhawk, thanks again for pointing out where Perry is in these standings. It really gives us fans a better appreciation of his accomplishments while at KU.

Perry is in good shape to move into the top 10 in scoring needing 166. Minimum games (7) he would need to average 23.7. Most likely games (11) he would need to average 15.1 (very doable) and maximum games (13) he would need to average 12.8. Rebounding is a bit more of a challenge. He is going to need to step it up. He needs 70 rebounds. Assuming minimum games (7) he would need to average 10, assuming most likely games (11) he would need to average 6.4 (very doable) and assuming maximum games (13) he would need to average 5.4. Considering he would only be the 5th player to do this, this is a rare occurence and not likely to happen again anytime in the foreseeable future. I hope we celebrate his career appropriately as the denouement approaches.

Agreed, Corpus!

As an aside, for some reason *denouement*, despite actually having a very neutral meaning, always seems to possess an unhappy "flavor" to me. Maybe it's a byproduct of growing up with the emerging prominence of the antihero in the 1960s and 70s? Too many unhappy endings?

Here's hoping Mr. Ellis has the greatest possible ending to a college basketball career!

NB: I added SCORING RANK to this table so you could see who the best at doing both were. As CorpusJayhawk pointed out earlier, only Danny, Nick and Raef are Top 10 in both lists. If you looked at who are in the Top 15 in both categories, you would then include Clyde, Perry and Dave Robisch. And again, the ONLY reason Wilt is not Top 10 in both is that he only played two years, a total of 48 games. With his 29.9 PPG and 18.3 RPG, he would have easily been both if he stayed for his senior year. And here's a bit of trivia for you -- if he had stayed for his senior year, future All-Big Ten guard and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Jerry Colangelo might have stayed at KU instead of transferring to Illinois when Wilt left KU for the Globetrotters. Just have to wonder what a difference that would have made for Dick Harp's teams after the 1958 season (Wilt's last).

Best of luck to you and your teammates, Perry!
And CONGRATULATIONS BIG XII CHAMPIONS!

I have tickets for next Saturday, and beside the possible drama of competing for a sole v. co championship, I wanted to be there for the last go round of this class .
My last senior day the speeches were kinda " Oh that's nice.' This time we have three very different stories that when combined sum up where we are are a program. Mari, the kid from Chicago, partial qualifier, who toughs it out and will walk in May. Evan son of the greatest KU player of my lifetime ( our time as KU students overlapped by two years) great student and Perry the local kid, McDAA , face of the program who, quite honestly, can only be criticized because his game does not appear to project that well at the next level.
Good job men and best of luck.

One regular season game, plus at least 2 post-season games are left in his KU career.
A possible 1+3+6=10 games remain (yes, please, and thank you!)

Monday against Texas he scored 20 points to pass Mark Randall for 12th place in scoring.
He needs 48 more points to pass Kevin Pritchard, and 109 more points to pass Kirk Hinrich for 10th place (see below).
If he plays to his 16.3 PPG season average, he will need 3 more games to pass Kevin and 7 more games to pass Kirk.

He recorded 4 rebounds, so he is still in 13th place in rebounding, 23 behind Dave Robisch in 12th place.
He needs 58 more rebounds to tie and 59 to pass Scot Pollard for 10th place (see below).
If he plays to his 6.0 RPG season average, he will need 5 games to pass Dave and 10 games to pass Scot (IOW: 3 B12T and 6 NCAA games). His chances of passing Scot, or even Big Clyde (47 rebounds away) are eroding, but he has a solid chance to pass Dave for 12th place.

At least 2 post-season games are left in his KU career.
A possible 3+6=9 games remain (yes, please, and thank you!)

On Senior Day against ISU he scored 22 points.
He needs 26 more points to pass Kevin Pritchard, and 87 more points to pass Kirk Hinrich for 10th place (see below).
If he plays to his 16.5 PPG season average, he will need 2 more games to pass Kevin and 6 more games to pass Kirk.

He recorded 7 rebounds, so he is still in 13th place in rebounding, 16 behind Dave Robisch in 12th place.
He needs 51 more rebounds to tie and 52 to pass Scot Pollard for 10th place (see below).
If he plays to his 6.0 RPG season average, he will need 3 games to pass Dave and 9 games to pass Scot (IOW: 3 B12T and 6 NCAA games). His chances of passing Scot, or even Big Clyde (40 rebounds away) are eroding, but he has a solid chance to pass Dave for 12th place.

Based on the 2015-16 MBB Media Guide and KUAD Cumulative Statistics for 2015-16, these are the folks standing in Perry's path to the KUMBB Top 10 in Career Points and Career Rebounds.

14 Greg Ostertag 6.1 770 na
15 Thomas Robinson 7.3 763 na
NB: I added SCORING RANK to this table so you could see who the best at doing both were. As CorpusJayhawk pointed out earlier, only Danny, Nick and Raef are Top 10 in both lists. If you looked at who are in the Top 15 in both categories, you would then include Clyde, Perry and Dave Robisch. And again, the ONLY reason Wilt is not Top 10 in both is that he only played two years, a total of 48 games. With his 29.9 PPG and 18.3 RPG, he would have easily been both (2nd in scoring and 1st in rebounding) if he stayed for his senior year.

Best of luck to you and your teammates, Perry!

We are holding on "at least 2 games to go" for each update until after the Big 12 Tournament, at which point we will be holding on "at least 1" for each update until KU is no longer playing in the NCAA tournament.

So -- today there are at least 2 games left in Perry's KU career.
A possible 2+6=8 games remain (yes, please, and thank you!)

In KU's B12T win against KState, Perry recorded:
21 points
6 rebounds

He needs 5 more points to pass Kevin Pritchard for 11th place, and
66 more points to pass Kirk Hinrich for 10th place (see below).
If he plays to his 16.6 PPG season average, he will pass Kevin tomorrow against Baylor,
but will need at least 4 more games (including tomorrow's game) to pass Kirk.
FWIW, he has scored 20 and 22 his last two games, and it would be so great to see him keep that up for 8 more games!!!

He is still 13th in rebounding, 10 behind Dave Robisch.
If he plays to his 6.0 RPG season average, he will need 2 games to pass Dave.
He will need 6 games (35 rebounds) to pass Cumulus Clyde (RIP, Jayhawk :( ), and
8 games (46 rebounds) to pass Scot.
Two more title games, anybody? ;)

Based on the 2015-16 MBB Media Guide and KUAD Cumulative Statistics for 2015-16, these are the folks standing in Perry's path to the KUMBB Top 10 in Career Points and Career Rebounds.

A possible 1+6=7 games remain (yes, please, and thank you!)

He passed Kevin Pritchard for 11th place in KU career scoring, and needs

If he plays to his 16.7 PPG season average, he will need at least 3 more games (including tomorrow's game) to pass Kirk.
FWIW, he has scored 20, 22 and 20 his last three games, and it would be so great to see him keep that up for 7 more games!!!
(BTW, if that happens, at 16.7 PPG he could end up as high as #6!)
(He would need to average almost 26 PPG for 7 games to pass Sherron Collins for the #5 spot.)
(Also BTW, anybody notice that 3 of the top 5 scorers in KU history were on an NCAA championship team? B) )

He is still 13th in rebounding, 6 behind Dave Robisch.
If he plays to his 6.0 RPG season average, he will need 1 game to tie, 2 games to pass Dave.
He will need 6 games (31 rebounds) to pass Cumulus Clyde (RIP, ), and
7 games (42 rebounds) to pass Scot.
Gonna need that second title game to make it.
