That was the rationale Sophia Petrillo gave for not returning extra SS checks mistakenly sent to her. This is so true. My parents, who were a young couple when Social Security began, often related that the government promised (actually it was a law) that the funds would never be touched. I finally researched and found that money was "borrowed" from SS at least as early as the 1950's and has continued through the years, never being paid back.
I'm not anti-government, but it angers me every time a politician complains that Social Security and Medicare are responsible for our country's financial woes.
So yes, they're not good with money, and we may pay dearly for their having gutted SS funds.
