Something has been bothering me about the rhetoric following the congressman's being shot. As I remember, after the Sandy Hook or the Columbine tragedies, or any of the other instances of mass shootings, no one came on TV and said we should be nicer to each other. As well-liked as Gabby Giffords was reported to be, after she was shot there was no pleading for us to be kinder to one another.
I don't disagree with the rhetoric as much as I wish those putting forth the message would have said, "We don't think we have done our part to work together in respect for our fellow man and for the love of our country. This tragedy has made us look at ourselves and ask how we can be better persons. We hope others will do the same."
