Because they signed him to a one year contract. If they don't get something for him in a trade, they lose him at the end of the year anyway and get nothing. They're rebuilding for the future.
That said, the last batch of stars was lightning in a bottle. Given their limited payroll capacity, I doubt we'll see a winner again anytime soon.
