Last week lose Moustakas for the season (torn ACL) and Gordon on the 15 day DL after they collided chasing a foul fly ball.
Today they are down 7-1 at home against the White Sox and Salvy gets injured in the top of the 9th inning, necessitating backup catcher Drew Butera take his place for the last few outs of what was looking to be a miserable loss.
Seven -- count 'em, SEVEN -- runs later in the Royals bottom half of the 9th, combined with the news that Salvy is just going to have a badly bruised left quadriceps (no bone or ligament damage), and you have to wonder if the Royals are going to carry on despite the heavy personnel losses.
Oh, by the way - Butera, hitting in Salvy's spot in his only at bat in the game, knocks a two out, game tying RBI double plating Hosmer with the 6th Royals run of the inning to ensure the game at least goes to extras. Following Butera, rookie DH Brett Eibner, in just the second game of his major league career, has an epic at bat against Chisox fireball (98-99 MPH) reliever Thomas Kahnle, working to a 3-2 count, fouling off pitch after pitch( 5 times!) until finally rifling a hot grounder into right field for his second hit of the inning, a walk-off RBI single!
I'm telling you, it felt like post-season Royals baseball, folks. The crowd was psyched, the team was stoked, the atmosphere was electric as play continued. Merrifield, playing LF in the place of the injured Gordon, had 2 hits in the game, one an infield single in the 9th that could have been a DP but it hard bounced off the pitcher's glove to keep the line moving and knock in 2, and then scored as well himself. Eibner, subbing for the slumping Kendrys Morales in the DH slot, had 2 hits in the 9th, scoring a run after knocking a double as the 3rd batter early in the Royals half of the 9th, and then winning the game as the 12th Royals batter in the inning with his second hit.
Now in a 3 way tie for first in the division with Cleveland and the White Sox.
Let's Go, Roy-als!
Woo Hoo!
