OP for this year’s thread.

DATES
2025-03-24 Monday: portal officially opened

2025-04-22: Portal closing date. Note well: even after this date, players have a 30 day window to enter the portal upon the official announcement of their head coach leaving. Also remember this is simply the last regularly scheduled date they can *enter* the transfer portal. IIRC they have until the start of the fall term to complete the process.

INFORMATION
As of 12:30 pm today (2025-03-26), over 1,000 players had entered the portal.

From CBSSports.com:
2025 cycle brings a few key changes. Most notably, the portal opens a week later than it did in 2024, no longer overlapping with the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. This shift means 75% of tournament teams will already be eliminated by the time players can officially enter.

Additionally, the transfer window has been shortened from 45 days to 30. The move is part of an effort to create more stability and predictability for college programs navigating roster management, recruiting and NIL negotiations. By closing the portal before the grassroots recruiting calendar kicks off in May, the NCAA hopes to reduce overlap and roster uncertainty.

As the transfer cycle begins, expect major movement across the sport. Top players are already being linked to the portal, and NIL remains a driving factor in player decisions.

CBS Sports and 247Sports as we cover the basketball transfer portal window from start to finish with a live tracker, updated player rankings, and more.

No real surprise here, most everyone with ties to the program expected it.

247Sports.com: Kansas forward Zach Clemence enters the NCAA Transfer Portal

Recapping here Available Scholarship info for KU for AY2025-26 from the pinned recruiting thread.

First, there is a new wrinkle starting next academic year.

Effective AY2025-26 the NCAA eliminated scholarship caps for all NCAA sports, instead establishing new roster limits for each sport (15 for both M&W hoops) and allowing schools to provide as many scholarships as the roster limit will allow. Note that this means that having a walk-on fill a roster spot decreases the # of scholarships a school can provide in a given sport in a given season.

With KU’s penalty tied to # of scholarships, the max KU can offer next season is 14. But if I understand correctly, KU can still have 15 players on the roster (I.e., a walk-on), as the penalty does not mention roster limits.

With everyone leaving - including Zach Clemence - here’s the scholarship availability status as of today as I understand it -

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
UPDATED 2025-03-28
14 (Final installment of the NCAA penalty to be taken AY2025-26, when scholarship and roster limits change to 15 players)
- 6 returning scholarship players (after known Early Entrees/Transfers out)
= 8 openings (after known EEs/Transfers Out)
- 3 new scholarship players (HS recruits, transfers in, upgraded walk-ons?)
5 scholarships available as of update date

And if, as I heard today, Noah Shelby is indeed set to get a scholarship for next AY, the 5 available scholarships above is reduced to 4.

KUMBB used all 13 scholarships for AY2024-25, so the final penalty scholarship loss must be taken in AY2025-26. The changes in scholarship caps and roster limits for AY2025-26 are part of a major settlement agreement involving three lawsuits against the NCAA and the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC: House v. NCAA, Hubbard v. NCAA and Carter v. NCAA. Accordingly, KU will have 14 scholarship players plus 1 walk-on available next AY, then be at a full 15 player roster and 15 scholarships possible starting AY2026-27.

I feel bad for Zach. He's been a loyal soldier, biding his time, waiting for his chance. All the while everything I've heard is that he works hard and is a good teammate. Sadly he coincided with the HD era, which obvously limited his opportunities. In an ideal world, I'd love to see him develop enough to get some decent PT on next year's squad, but who know whether that's possible especially with Budinga's upside.

Hope Zach figures it out and has success. The guy certainly put in the time.

From JayhawkSlant (link)

(S)ome factors still in play with players entering the portal and timing,

One is several schools sign players to NIL contracts and the payments are due at the end of the month. So, there are several players who may wait to get their payments before they enter.

Once a player officially enters the portal their NIL contracts are voided. Many will try to get their last payment.

Several sources have also said keep an eye on the house settlement date set for April 7th. The NCAA plans to enforce contracts once the settlement is signed and that would affect the upfront payments before revenue sharing starts on July 1st

If schools start getting the sense the judge could sign the settlement on that day you might see a mad dash of schools trying to lock players in, and players also wanting to sign before the contracts are monitored.

Some believe even if the judge agrees to the settlement on April 7th there is a chance it may be signed a week or two later. That gives schools time to frontload money before it is watched.

As I just said to hoshi, here’s hoping Bidunga is just looking to drive up his NIL package.

So much to dislike about CBB today…:(

There are other teams out there that know his future worth so I hope the powers that be in Lawrence don't screw this one up.

Griffen supposedly in the portal now too. Dang. Hate this new reality.

The basketball community learned the hard way that all star teams that don't play together aren't very good that year that Team USA's "dream team" lost in the Olympics. But here we go with college basketball: KU will likley have 5 starters who have never played before, so it will be up to the staff to try and get them to play like a unit in very short time. Meanwhile, in the good old days, you'd have a mix of experience upperclassmen who knew the system and played well together, and you were only forced to integrate a couple of freshmen into the mix. Continuity was a good thing. That's apparently over. If anything it'll help smaller schools who can't afford to go star shopping.

Wondering if it's ever going to be possible to lock a kid in with an NIL deal. Like, "here's your million/year contract, but a.) you have to hit certain benchmarks, and b.) we own your rights for 3 consecutive years." My guess is that the answer is "no" because all a kid (cough cough pro athelete) has to do is claim that he wants to transfer to another school for acedemic reasons that aren't being fulfilled at the current place. Since the kid is a "student" and "really interested in persuing a major in art appreciation" he theoretically shouldn't be barred from transferring to an institution that excels in that particular field...like Kentucky, or maybe Duke.

Sigh. Just waiting to see Self's name pop up in the portal now.

Indiana has lost their E N T I R E team to the portal. All, 100%, every single one of their scholarship players have entered the portal. This can't continue.

Correction: Griffen hasn't announced yet, it was Passmore.

But given what's going on, I wouldn't be surprised.

Update: Griffen has in fact jumped into the portal.

At this point, the shorter list would be who HASN'T jumped.

It's dumb...it really is. Gone are the days I used to have a freshman become my favorite and grow into an amazing player and young man. Like Devonte, or Frank Mason, or Russ Rob, Thomas Robinson, the list goes on and on. This is absolutely ridiculous. The sport, as of this moment, is ruined. I had to have a roster out this year just to know who was on the floor.

NIL has become the free agency of College Basketball. It is no longer a student-athlete sport where they would play for the name on the front of the jersey. I felt when NIL came in that success would came with the highest bidder and that the power schools would yield the power of the purse. As a result, I too have watched very little college basketball including march madness because it is becoming not much more than the NBA development league. I used to be a college sport junky.

Add in the movement to make student-athletes employees of the University and some trying to unionize makes it all less appealing. Although, the previous situation where the student-athlete was restricted from getting any type of additional financial "income" wasn't fair either..

More and more, I find myself rooting for the smaller schools from afar in the tournament because of this.

Hoping you can open this as it's a breath of fresh air. Walk on, Dillon Wilhite announcing that he's "Declaring for the corporate draft". Essentially, he'll be graduating next year and will be looking for a job. Very funny and a little proof that there are still guys out there that are actual student athletes who are living out a hoop dream knowing that they're headed for a regular job after they graduate. Kudos to Dillon.
