What can I say at this point that hasn’t been said? Still it is a bit cathartic to type it out.
I have been thinking past teams that Self has had. I think about all the players that have developed under him. Sasha Kuan, for example, spent time under Self and developed into a stellar player.
So what has changed? I say the NIL era combined with the transfer portal has dramatically changed the world of college basketball.
Players don’t stick around and develop under a coach. The team comraderie that goes along with 3 or 4 years of playing together are gone. So what we have is good players leaving for playing time rather than develop under a coach or sit behind another player.
SO what do we have? We have a few players like KJ and Harris who are solid players, but maybe not first round NBA talent. We have a 65th year transfer earning a ton of money in Hunter who really isn’t athletic enough to jump for rebounds nor quick enough to really maneuver for a rebound. His rebounding is successful if the ball comes to him. I rarely see him go to the ball and get it as smaller, quicker, and more athletic players get there before he can get there. IF he really was as good as he was made out to be when he transferred to us, he would be in the NBA now.
We have a lot of guys who made a splash and transferred to KU only to be mediocre coming from our bench.
Not really certain why that is. Why can’t we get a transfer in that shoots 40% from the field. Behaved knows we have faced a ton of them this and last year.
We have also seen a lot of our raw, but athletic bigs transfer away to play well at other schools. Maybe they would be better at aKU, maybe not. We will never know, because they didn’t stick around long enough for us to find out.
The passion to play defense just isn’t there. Where is the players who want to go on the road and silence the crowd? When we play aggressively and play team defense we can do okay. When we go out there with no passion and no pride… well… we get spanked over and over again.
Where is our floor leader how has the pride and ability to motivate people? It certainly isn’t Hunter. He points around telling people where to go as his man blows by him or he is out of position to help, it frustrates the heck out of me.
The evaluation of talent seems to be lacking here. When Self only had a hole here or there to fill, it would work out. But when we have multiple holes and support to be filled, it doesn’t seem to come around to a favorable outcome.
