As painful as this season has become, I cut this team some slack. Why? Because the players are simply not that good...and they never have been this year. Yes, even at the start. Duke's freshmen were just getting their feet wet, Mich State always starts slowly under Izzo, and North Carolina? Well, North Carolina isn't any good this year. So that start was fool's gold. Look at the roster. A slow, plodding center whose stats look good but can't protect the rim. Two starters (both of whom I highly respect and like) who either can't shoot or don't look to shoot, and two transfers who haven't shown much if any of the skills they supposedly have. Where are the shooters? Who can get their own shot?(Mayo, once in a while, and he is undersized and struggles on defense). Where are the tough defenders? (Moore is pretty good, but he is no scorer, and that puts another offensive liability on the floor) The athleticism is lacking, and that was apparent even early in the season.
The one issue that really disturbs me is the oft times lack of energy That I don't understand. On that issue, I got nothing. Self says they need to get away from each other. Maybe he's sick of them, and they are sick of him.
