Historically, playing football or basketball at a junior college counted against a student-athlete’s NCAA eligibility. For example. playing football for 2 years at a JUCO would leave a player with 3 years of eligibility to play just two years at a four year school.
The Pavia ruling has the potential to stop this practice. For example, that same student-athlete playing two years at a JUCO would still have five years to play four years at an NCAA institution.
I have to say I agree with the judge’s arguments in his ruling. (It’s included in the article.)
The current ruling only applies to Pavia, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think JUCOs are going to do well with this ruling, seeing more players enroll knowing it won’t impact their NCAA eligibility once they move up.
