I was confused when I looked up the current roster entries. We appeared to be oner over the limit, 14 vs 13. Then I realized that Shelby Noah is listed as a preferred walk-on. Are we going to see more of this going forward when players can be given NIL money, as walkons, and not be counted towards the scholarship limits? Noah is probably not going to play this year but what will be his status, next year.. It appears we have 6 seniors that will use up their eligibility after this year and three freshmen incoming, so far. Giving up a scholarship because of the NCAA ruling means we have two remaining slots. This assumes we do not loose any of the non-senior players. Thoughts?

Current rules for D1 Men’s basketball -

Academic year for NCAA purposes:
June through May next year

13 = Scholarships/AY
18 = Roster limit each AY

Effective AY2025-26 -

15 = Scholarships/AY maximum
15 = Roster limit each AY

BUT for KU AY2025-26 -
14 = Scholarships/AY maximum*
15 = Roster limit each AY
*final NCAA penalty scholarship lost

The changes were part of the settlement last year. See the “ SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE” section of the pinned recruiting thread.

With the increase from 13 to 15 scholarships, after allowing for the penalty and the “known losses” and the three signees KU still has at least
4
more scholarships it can fill for next AY.

You ask “What about walk-ons starting next year?”

From site linked to on the pinned recruiting thread: NCSAsports.org: NEW NCAA SCHOLARSHIP AND ROSTER LIMITS FOR THE 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR -

HOW WILL NCAA ROSTER LIMITS IMPACT WALK-ONS?
Walk-ons have historically been a big part of D1 programs because of current NCAA scholarship limitations. But with the new NCAA scholarship rules and roster limits starting in the 2025-26 school year, coaches will need to rethink how they manage scholarships and roster spots. The exact impact on walk-ons is unknown at this time and will vary across different sports and schools, depending on their size and budget.

Self currently has
5 walk/ons
on this AY’s team that could potentially be here next AY.

AY2025-26 STATUS
SENIORS
G/F Justin Cross* (W)
F Dillon Wilhite* (W)

JUNIORS
G Wilder Evers* (W)
G Noah Shelby* (W)

SOPHOMORES
G Will Thengvall (W)

Will he offer rides to any of them for AY2025-26?

Will he stay at 13 and carry 2 walk-ons going forward?

Or will he use the 14 rides available to him next AY to try to upgrade the roster, essentially making walk-ons a thing of the past? (Except for next season, since he can still have a 15th roster player, he just can’t give #15 a scholarship next AY?)

I’m thinking the latter.

In which case it will be sad to see walk-ons disappear from the game.

Thanks for the clarification. I had heard that Noah had joined the team but had not heard more. Looks like he will be a junior next year. He was a 4 star player out of HS and highly ranked as a PG and a good shooter with decent size. Is Self lining him up as a Harris replacement or as a back-up. I think this is the first time I have seen this tactic. The increase in scholarship limit makes sense that we put off for one year meeting the NCAA scholarship requirement. I assume Noah is still with the team. Is that correct?

KUAD: Official roster
Noah’s still on the official roster, so I’d say yeah.
