"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"
Setting the stage for the AY2024-25 season.
Click here to go to the AY2023-24 thread.
Barring any edits made to the NCAA Record book during the offseason unrelated to last season's performances, this is the snapshot from which next season will start. This table will be proofed and edited (if needed) against the AY2024-25 official records book when it is published before the start of next season.
LOOKING AHEAD
1. For the second season in a row KANSAS starts the season trailing the leader UK by 5 games. Hopefully AY2024-25 will see KANSAS catch and pass the now Squid-less Lexington school. But don't count on it. Mark Pope is an excellent head coach.
(Query: do we dislike UK less now that Squid has migrated to Sooey U?)
2. UK (2 wins) and KANSAS (7 wins) are certain to become the first programs to earn 2400 wins, and UNC (28 wins) has a shot at joining that stratospheric club as well.
3. Starting the AY2024-25 season the Big 12 will have 6 teams in the Top 25 listing -- #2 KANSAS, #12 Cincinnati, #15 Utah, #17 BYU, #18 Arizona and #21 West Virginia. (It is notable to this Jayhawk that KANSAS is the only old Big 8 school in the listing).
4. AY2024-25 Syracuse (for the second time in its history) and Temple are positioned to join the prestigious 2000 Wins club.
Tied in 6th place, they both need just 7 wins to get to 2000.
5. If #11 Purdue can continue its winning ways without Zach Edey, they have the chance to pass Indiana for 10th place on the list. The Boilermakers trail the Hoosiers by just 2 wins to start AY2024-25.
6. New Big 12 member #15 Utah (3 wins), #16 Western Kentucky (6 wins), second year Big 12 member #17 BYU (8 wins), new Big 12 member #18 Arizona (11 wins) and #19 Villanova (18 wins) are all positioned to reach and pass 1900 program wins in AY2024-25.
Wish them all luck… except when they are playing ANY Big 12 team!

NOTES
1. The table reflects the 2023 NCAA IRP vacating of 15 wins from the KANSAS 2017-18 season from those 20 games in which retroactively declared ineligible Silvio De Sousa played.
2. The table shows the official NCAA record for Syracuse, which excludes the 101 wins the NCAA vacated in 2015. If those wins had not been vacated Syracuse would be #5 with almost 2100 wins.
3. Connecticut, which played its first season in 1901, is the only program with 4 or more NCAA Tournament titles not in the Top 10. In the Top 10 only 4 programs -- Kansas, Syracuse, Temple and Indiana -- have played more seasons than UConn. In the Top 25 there are 11 programs who have played more seasons (Kansas, Syracuse, Temple, Indiana, Purdue, Cincinnati, BYU, Washington, Penn, Michigan State and Princeton).

1. Note that the table for this first post for the AY2024-25 season includes the NCAA summer 2024 adjustments to Utah's all-time record (an additional win and two additional losses).
2. KANSAS has already gained a game on UK in the first few weeks of the season, trailing by 4 games after Sunday's games since UK has only played 3 games to KU's 4. Mark Pope is an excellent head coach, so expect a battle all year (at worst, please!)
(Query: do we dislike UK less now that Squid has migrated to Sooey U?)
3. Syracuse (for a second time in its history) and Temple will join the 2000 wins club this season. They are currently tied for 6th place with 1996 wins.
4. Projected new members of the 1900 wins club in AY2024-25
Utah hit 1900 with its second win of the season.

NOTES
Publishing on Saturday night because none of the Top 25 are playing on Sunday, so why wait?
With KU's wins over Duke and Furman, KANSAS and UK continue to race ahead of the rest of the field, both starting 7-0 and reaching 2400 program wins before the calendar runs out on November 2024. Mark Pope has the UK Wildcats playing well.
Syracuse and Temple are tied for 6th with 1997 wins.
Bitter rivals Indiana and Purdue are tied for 10th with 1936 wins.
Western Kentucky and BYU are tied for 16th with 1898 wins.
Princeton and Michigan State bring up the last of the Top 25 tied for 24th with 1837 wins each.

NOTES

WELCOME TO THE 2000 WINS CLUB, TEMPLE UNIVERSITY OWLS!
With their win against Davidson last Wednesday the Owls became just the seventh team in Division 1 history to reach the 2000 program wins level. They join KANSAS, UK, UNC, Duke, last AY's entrant UCLA and former member Syracuse in reaching that exalted mark. (Syracuse is still two wins shy of returning to the club after losing 101 wins to the vagaries of NCAA enforcement in 2015). No other program has the possibility of joining the club this AY, but with two consecutive solid seasons Notre Dame is most likely to be the next member some time in AY2025-26, with the Johnnies of St John's a distant second possibility.
