EDITED TO UPDATE RANKINGS AS OF 2024-02-05
Saturday 2024-02-03 was one of the most perfect college basketball days in memory.
KANSAS beat Houston in THE "PHOG"!!! while TCU (home), Tech (home) and ISU (road) all lost, leaving
KU & Houston tied atop the Big 12,
BU, ISU and TT tied for 3rd and
TCU way back in 6th as the only other Big 12 program with a winning conference record to date.
Oh, and KState lost its 4th Big 12 game in a row (at the punchless Cowboys) and now awaits Big Monday in the Little Apple to try to take out their frustrations on our Jayhawks.
Also --
Kentucky lost in Rupp to Tennessee (Thank you, Coach Barnes!), so KU only trails those other Wildcats by 2 wins in the ATWP accounting.
The tarred ones won a meteor game at home against the Durham gang.
And in an obscure footnote in NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball history, sad sack Vanderbilt won it's first SEC game of the season by keeping the purported men's team from Meth U winless in conference.
Yep, a Mary Poppins Saturday indeed -- practically perfect in every way.

"When I was a freshman, I remember Coach Naismith telling us how important it was to play good defense." - Mitch Lightfoot
It's critical right now that KU avoids any unforced errors. ESPN has KU as a 66% chance of winning tonight and we MUST win this game. While KU is undefeated at home, we're a not good 1-3 on the road. If the "recipe" for a conference championship is winning at hime and half your road games, we can only afford to lose 1-2 more road games (assuming we stay undefeated at home). With games at KSU, Baylor, Houston. Tech, and OU remaining, this is the "easy" one.
And while I'm happy we're tied for 1st place and in control or our own destiny, I'm also working with the assmption that 2 of the 3 5-3 teams will eventually be even with us once we get back to the same number of games played. I suppose it's a good thing that Tech plays at Baylor tomorrow, so one of them will fall down to 4 losses. ISU will have its work cut out for themselves at Texas, so if we're VERY lucky, only one team stays at 3 losses of those.
The only other optimistic thing I see ahead is that assuming KU takes care of business tonight, they have a full week to prepare for Baylor which will be yet another "critical" game, but luckily will be in AFH.

I'll add that even if we do everything right, the season will likely come down to the last 2 Saturdays of the season when we play at Baylor and at Houston respectively. While it would be nice if we have a cushion of a few games' lead heading into those, I have stong doubts that will be the case.
