And this ain’t no furphy, mate..,

For anyone who might know -

Is Johnny Furphy a descendant of John Furphy (1842-1920), inventor of the mobile water tanks used by the ANZAC in WWI? His later years he settled in Melbourne, which is where our Johnny is from.

Or maybe from the elder JF’s younger brother, the author Joseph Furphy (considered the "Father of the Australian Novel”). But Joseph died in Western Australia, so I’m thinking the more likely ancestor is John, as Johnny is from Melbourne.

Anyone? hoshi? hoshi?

More important, is he related Furphy beer? If I run into Johnny again, I will ask him. It is my understanding that Johnny grew up in an inner city Melbourne suburb called Fitzroy, which is or was a blue collar suburb when I was young. Does not mean he was not related to either the Tank maker or the beer. Furphy is not a very common name down under.

Do Aussies refer to people living in the Northern hemisphere as being from “Up There?”

Don’t know Aussie for any Northern hemisphere folks beyond “Poms” for Brits and “Yank” for any US citizen (which thoroughly ticks off some U.S. Southerners).
And I have “Ms. Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” and “Crocodile Dundee” to thank for that much!

I’m sure that there are some less kind terms for us “Americans” (a term which is generally synonymous with “monolinguals” in many other countries), but I don’t know them (yet).

Anybody else?
