Houston's good, but with a SOS in the 140 range, they haven't been tested. Winning on the road in the Big 12 is no picnic, particularly in Ames.

Yeah, pretty ugly.

And now Purdue not only gets beat, but lets it get out of hand in the stretch.

Both Purdue (#1) and Houston (#2) lost to unranked teams. Purdue won't fall that far based on their resume, but this could be seen as a big deal for Houston based on their weak SOS. And Houston plays at TCU on Saturday which won't be a picnic, especially with that fugly floor they play on.

KU needs to take care of business on their trip to Orlando.

Amen, NotO, amen!

Sure hope they’re paying attention.

I can't say for sure, but I have a strong hunch that they're aware.

I know that HCBS claims not to pay a lot of attention to polls and is more focused on conference standings, but I'm sure that everyone up and down the line, from HCBS down to the most junior equipment manager is aware of the implications from last night.

The only difference, I imagine, is that I'd expect the coaches are positioning this as more of a "cautionary tale" than an opportunity. I'm sure both Purdue and Houston were caught a little flatfooted by the intensity they didn't expect from their opponents. Any coach would be telling his guys, "don't let this be you tonight...be prepared for battle at tipoff."

Losing a conference road game isn't the worst thing that can happen, but when you're at the top of the rankings and the opponent isn't even ranked, that might leave a dent in the bodywork.

Absolutely on the “cautionary tale” approach! The possibility of being #1 next Monday *if* they can win tonight and Saturday won’t be discussed at all if Self has his way. The chance for a conference road win tonight (always a “golden ring” in conference play) will be a major emphasis, along with notice that UCF is much tougher at home (7-2) than away or neutral (2-2).

I’m sure the HCBS emphasis re: last night will be on the Knights being fired up tonight to defeat a Top 3 team — and potentially new #1 and perennial Big 12 champion — and home teams Iowa State and NU just demonstrated it can happen!

Golden opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others… be ready at the start on the road! It’s much harder to play catch up when in enemy territory!

Agree with the assessments here. The fact that Houston leaped KU after playing pretty much nobody was bogus. BUT, I try to not focus on the rankings anymore and only care how we get seeded, where we get seeded and how we finish in the tourney.

As far as Purdue, they have played a strong schedule and are deserving of being top 5 for sure. Houston, not so much. I think this is going to be a brutal Big 12 season and I can't imagine what next year will be like.

I also think this season will be brutal, and wonder about next year when the 4 corners schools replace and augment the conference with the departing OUt programs.

This season with 14 Big 12 teams Kansas will play 18 games…

Home-and-away vs 5 teams: Baylor, Houston, K-State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State

Home or Away against the other 8 teams -

Home-only: BYU, Cincinnati, TCU, Texas

Away-only: UCF, Iowa State, Texas Tech, West Virginia

Next season with 16 teams the season will be 20 games long and IIRC

H&A vs 5 teams

H or A vs the other 10.

And 2 fewer non-conference games to prepare for it since the season games limit will still be 31 games.

And they go ahead a wet the bed at UCF, what the heck. This is a game they were rolling and then just flatlined.
