OK, we have 10 players currently on scholarship including Clemence, who is red shirting. Not sure if Morris counts for this semester/year as he was on the team and possibly enrolled before being kicked off. If yes, then there were 11 players at the beginning.
We had a self-imposed scholarship limit over three years, which will be fulfilled regardless of whether Morris is counted or not.
So, next year, depending on whether Dickinson and Harris come back for another year, how many players could we add, assuming no out transfers? It seems to me, that with the three current signees and the numbers we will or might lose, we could add many more players, HELP HE! How many more of those will be HS graduates, how many transfers, any additional foreign players? Fun to speculate.

TLDR
12 total scholarships allowed AY (13-1 AY2024-25)
- 7 returning scholarship players (after known EEs/Transfers out)
= 5 openings (after known EEs/Transfers Out)
- 3 new scholarship players (HS recruits and transfers in)
∴ 2 scholarships available as of today

DETAILS

Morris counts, so 11 scholarship players this AY.

IF no Spring Semester add over winter break, this AY KU can tick off 2 of the 3 scholarships they gave up over three years (1 per year or any combination over three years that leads to 3 rides lost).

Everything I am reading/hearing is no winter break add, so after this AY KU will still have one more scholarship to forego either next AY or AY2025-26.

Assume Self wants to work through the penalty asap. 12 rides next AY, then return to full complement of 13 after that.

4 Scholarship players “leaving” for sure
Braun
Timberlake
McCullar
Morris (he counts for entire AY even though already gone)

7 Scholarship players projected to return
Dickinson
Harris
Adams
Clemence
Jackson
Furphy
McDowell

3 HS recruits
Bidunga
Philon
Passmore

Ceteris paribus (no other losses)->

2 Available scholarships to fill

I’m thinking Self may use them for transfers, going for experienced players.

I know they were looking for a possible foreign addition during this winter break, but nothing has materialized.

HE, I think you might off by one possible addition. We had to give up three scholarships over three years and since we gave up one last year and two this year, haven’t we filled that obligation after this year? Thus we can add another three players, total. That also assumes that both Dickinson and Harris come back. Therefore we can add an additional 3-5 players. My guess is that at least 1-2 will be transfers.

AY2022-23 KU had 13 scholarship players. See table at bottom of this post.

Penalty pay off began with this AY.

2 checked off this AY assuming no late adds for Spring 2024 1 left.
12 available next AY assuming Bill wants to pay it off ASAP.
∴ 2 scholarships open at present, as previously noted.

Both Dickinson and Harris may leave, but each has indicated they plan on being back, so I'm going with their statements pending updates otherwise.

Barring any presently unknown losses for whatever reason, the # is 2 more possible for now.

With 3 new freshman (HS signees) and 3 sophomores in the projected returning 7 scholly players, that's 6 of 12 rides. If a high level HS player wants to come I'm sure Bill will take him, but I can also see him looking hard at the transfer portal, especially for high level juniors looking to move.
