We can only hope, hairy… Hope they come together defensively and offensively and hope McCullar’s okay and that Furphy will be a contributor once healthy.hairyhawk wrote: A lot of roster turnover means a lot of work for the team to learn to play together. The coaches sure have their work cut out for themselves this year. I feel very strongly that the team we saw today will be very different in January.

I'm sure they'll have some tough practices this week, but I'm also confident that they'll listen better to any criticism that's given. Lots of tape for Self in this process.
As ugly as this was, it's a good thing. Reality check for the team, game was meaningless beyond some minor bragging points, and I'm sure they raised a ton of money for Maui. All good.

We weren't looking for any 3s, and so the offense looked bad. But if you watched KJ in the first half, he seemed lost and out of the scheme. But second half he got inside and got some dunks, which I think is what Self was hoping for. Get used to the giant, and where he will be on the court, then adapt and make yourself available. It seemed to work as time went on.
But Hunter looks useless defensively. Very slow, and not at all a shot blocker, though he'll get a few just by being huge.
I'm mentally prepared for a Self KU team now. Don't get too worked up good or bad until February/March. He's about another nat'l championship - period.

I’m thinking you are right. With the conference title streak no longer a factor, I think the grand prize truly is where he is focused now. I’m not saying he doesn’t care about winning all 3, Big 12 regular season and tournament titles and NCAA crown, I’m sure he does. But at this point in his career, I think the NCAA title is the legacy sealant he wants.
Assuming he stays healthy, passing Phog in KU wins is a given.
Winning more Big 12 titles is highly likely.
The two career goals that are still wayyyyy out there are winning 1000 games and winning more NCAA titles… and with longevity the 1000 wins is far more likely than another NCAA title.
At present Self and KU are both 7th in all-time NCAA Tournament titles.
Self is the only active coach with 2 or more titles, tied for 7th place with 8 other coaches with 2 titles.
Another title and he jumps to being tied for 4th place with Roy, Bob Knight (who died today at 83) and Jim Calhoun.
