When it comes to playing the best you can't always control how many teams will be on your schedule since a lot of that is conference play. But you totally control how many you win. And KU under Self has won a higher percentage of games against top competition than any other team. It is actually quite shocking how much better KU is than the field. Duke is actually respectable but the next team up in each category is pretty well far behind. The tables below show the records against Top 10, Top 25 and Top 50 teams. KU holds the top win % in each of those categories. Here is maybe a surprising stat, Only 2 teams have a winning % against Top 10 teams in the last 20 years, Kansas and Duke. Only 4 teams have a winning record against top 25 teams and only 10 teams have a winning record against top 50 teams. Just for clarification, I limited the teams in each category to the top 75 in total games played or 33 total games against top 10 teams, 92 games against top 25 teams and 189 against top 50.
TOP 10
Duke has actually won more games against top 10 teams but KU has a slightly higher win%. If you want a nice chuckle look at Kentucky's record against top 10 teams. 35.9% win%. Gonzaga is even worse at 27.8%. KU has played the 17th most games against Top 10 teams but as I said, that is largely due to the conference schedule. Other Big 12 schools have played more top 10 teams than KU but that is because in the last 20 years they have had to play KU twice a year and KU is almost always in the top 10.
KU starts to gain separation from Duke in top 25 games winning 64.2% to Dukes 61.6%. Kentucky respectably rises to 3rd but way back at 51.5%. Only UNC is above 50%. KU has played the 4th most games against top 25 teams.
Against top 50 teams KU extends its margin over Duke and is well ahead of Kentucky in 3rd. Still the top 4 are the same with KU, Duke, Kentucky and UNC. KU has also played the most games against top 50 competition and by quite a bit over 2nd place Michigan St, 384 vs. 367.
