Here is the latest info on the net regarding the potential for Pac12-2 (UCLA & USC) schools to consider leaving their current home for the Big 12 (because the B1G and SEC aren't extending any invites now with UCLA & USC looking to Head East to the B1G (should we crank up "SInce You Been Gone?" for the Pac12-2?)

Here's the text of main tweet:

Jim Williams @JWMediaDC
Spoke to a high-ranking administrator for one of the @pac12 "four corner schools"
"We remain optimistic that we will get a media deal that will keep the conference together. Having said that we have spoken to the
@Big12Conference in exploratory due diligence conversations. Moving from one conference to another is no simple process and, to be frank, IF we are considering changing memberships for exposure reasons then we need to see the number of games we will be getting on linear in advance. It makes no sense to move if we are getting less exposure than @byu, @GoBEARCATS, @UHouston or @UCF_Football"

=====================================

NOTES
1. Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Arizona State are the "four corners" schools.

2. "Linear" television is the new term for old fashioned TV coverage -- programming on a specific channel at a specific date and time. The term is used to differentiate the platform from "Over the Top" (OTT) TV, what us folks call streaming service TV, delivered via the internet and pretty much on demand with the exception of live events such as sports.

3. With OUtu leaving the Big 12 summer 2024, adding all the "4 corners" schools would bring the Big 12 up to 16 members, which seems to be the major conference size being talked about the most.

COMMENTS

First, yeah, this is football talk, but I'm putting it here because it affects hoops and so many other things as well.

Second -- "IF we are considering changing memberships for exposure reasons then we need to see the number of games we will be getting on linear in advance. It makes no sense to move if we are getting less exposure than @byu, @GoBEARCATS, @UHouston or @UCF_Football"

Uh, no.
The question is how would your linear TV coverage change compared to what it would be if you opted to stay in the Pac12-2?

And I'd be willing to bet without seeing the data that if all 4 schools joined the Big 12 their linear exposure would be increased by at least 50% of what they would get in the Pac12-2.
Why do I say that?
Math.
9 Conference games means 6 games against Big 12 teams, which just because of the difference in time zones should create huge increases in nationwide linear exposure.

preseason CFB Top 25 teams in the Big 12+2 and the Pac12-2
BIG 12+2 Pac12-2
5 Texas 13 Oregon
11 Oklahoma 15 Utah
17 TCU 21 Washington
22 Texas Tech 24 Oregon St
23 Baylor
Plus all of new Big 12 members Cincinnati, Houston, BYU and Houston are solid football schools that will attract more eyes across the nation than Oregon, Oregon St and Washington or any of the other remaining Pac12-2 schools.

Note that Utah is currently the only "four corners" program in the preseason CFB Top 25.

We should know more of what the landscape will look like by the time hoops starts up again.

From a JayhawkSlant poster:

fivewords
Today @10:41am

Some nuggets today

John Ourand (Sports Business Journal) updates
•Pac deal with AppleTV isn't even close, if it happens at all
•Presidents won't know the details for at least another month if it happens, speculates the soonest a deal could get done is around Labor Day
•"Framework" presented last week was basically meaningless, no partners identified

From Finebaum this morning
•IF the Pac is able to get a deal, it won't be a good one
•PAC's future is bleak
•CO & UA to B12 is very viable
•PAC has no shot of becoming third most valuable conference
•Ranks B12 ahead of ACC as third most valuable conference among the P5. Yormark has done great
•ACC is stuck. Can't expand. Concentrated on bball too long.
Will be making a mistake if the move to unequal revenue sharing

Posters I consider as close to Jayhawk amateur SMEs as we can get commenting in reply to the above…

Looks pretty bleak for the PAC's survival if this is all accurate. Ourand, in particular, knows his stuff.

I tend to take everything Finebaum says with a huge grain of salt…he gets paid for sensationalism. The wilder the stuff, the more listeners/readers he can attract. It’s how he makes his money.

Ourand though? That’s an entirely different story altogether. SBJ gets paid for being accurate and timely. Ourand doesn’t give a shit about clickbait. What he’s saying should be concerning for PAC-12 programs for a variety of reasons.

First, GK has continued to buy time by saying they’re close over and over again. The media has been told to expect to hear about a deal 3-4 weeks from now so many times it no longer has meaning. I don’t know how anyone can think that either GK and/or the presidents are simply kicking the can down the road…either they’re not nearly as close to a deal as they continue to tell people they are OR the numbers have been so far away from what they need that it amounts to the same thing.

Second, as of July 1 it went from “if we don’t get this done soon, it may end up impacting our budgeting processes” to “it’s going to delay our budgeting processes”. From July-September, schools typically start to line up their financial need. They can still go through it as a hypothetical exercise, but best case scenario it will need a major scrub after Labor Day. Not the end of the world, but painful…if it’s done by Labor Day. It’s going to continue to condense and that’s going to be a problem.

“GK” is Pac12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff.
