WIth all the sturm und drang around the league last season, I thought to do a summary of who's who for Big 12 MBB head coaches for the coming AY2023-24 season.
Let's start with who the programs actually are going to be come July 2023...*Hired as Head Coach after the AY2022-23 season
Both Rodney Terry (Texas) and Grant McCasland (Texas Tech) were new hires. Texas finally took the "Interim" label off Terry's job description, and McCasland came from a very succesful stint at North Texas. Here's a bit on them both from David Cobb at CBSSports.com...
Rodney Terry (a B hire): Terry deserved a chance at the full-time job after taking over for Chris Beard midseason. He guided Texas to a Big 12 Tournament title and the Elite Eight, but he wouldn't have been the Longhorns' first pick under normal circumstances. Terry posted a 163-156 record across seven seasons at Fresno State and three at UTEP . That's a respectable record at two difficult jobs but not the type of résumé that typically gets coaches into the mix for gigs like this.
Grant McCasland (an A hire): McCasland comes from the Scott Drew coaching tree at Baylor , which has produced the likes of Jerome Tang ( Kansas State ) and Paul Mills ( Wichita State ). He was superb at North Texas and already knows his way around Lubbock, Texas, after beginning his career there as TTU's director of operations. The Big 12 is cutthroat, but McCasland's resume suggests he's ready for the challenge.
Wikipedia has pages on each coach , with links to supporting articles at the end of each page, if you are interested in learning more about them.
And of course, next year will see the final seasons of OU and tu as members of the Big 12.
To paraphrase Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, if those schools don't wanna know, forget 'em!
