Saw the subject question raised elsewhere online.
If all goes well, Bill will retire as the winningest head coach in Kansas history after he passes Phog in all-time Kansas wins next season. Anywhere else that would automatically equate to the “greatest” head coach in program history, but at Kansas Phog Allen, with his 3 NCs and all his contributions to the game beyond his Kansas W-L record — coaching contributions, coaching tree, NCAA Tournament founding, etc. — has a strong claim to the “greatest” title. And Self himself would probably downplay such talk, arguing his success in significant part was possible because he stood “on the shoulders of giants” in Allen, Iba, Brown and the others who came before him to pave the way for his contributions to Kansas and college basketball history.
Shoot, he is arguably in his coaching prime, and if he should be so fortunate as to win two or three more national championships before he retires, he would be in the discussion with Wooden and K for the GOAT for ALL college basketball, not just Kansas.
But whatever you would choose to crown him, we can all agree he deserves to get special permanent recognition on campus for his Kansas career. But how to do that?
1. Rename Allen Fieldhouse to
Allen-Self Fieldhouse? (Would it still be “THE PHOG” if they did?)
2. Or call the actual game section of the building (court and stands)
Self Arena in Allen Fieldhouse?
3. Put a Self statue next to Phog’s?
4. Other?
My favorite option of the above choices is
Self Arena.
The Phog stays The Phog,
Naismith Court stays Naismith Court and signs reading
SELF ARENA
are proudly displayed over every entrance to the game section of AFH so the TV cameras showed them every game.
What do y’all think?
What would *you* like to see done to honor him?
And remember it can be more than one thing, e.g., a naming/renaming *and* a statue.
After we are done coming up with any other options (to include “combos” as Bill loves “combo” guards so much), maybe Bayhawk can do a poll?
You have the ball, do great things with it!

I don't think you can do anything to bump Phog or Naismith out, and I feel like renaming the arena for Self detracts from Allen and Naismith. I like the idea of a Self statue of course.
One thing to consider is that Allen Fieldhouse sits on Naismith Drive. Changing the name of the court would be less of a problem with Naismith owning the road and that little instructional piece of paper that we picked up a few years ago.
Or maybe Self's name could be attached to the area with all the trophies and championships...the Bill Self Champions Pavilion or something.
Or maybe the student section of the seating. Or the home bench.
This is a very 1st world problem to have to deal with.
