Go to the 8:10 mark and watch 'til the end (about a minute). After you watch, you can read my reaction to his those specific comments (if you so choose )
Thought this was interesting. He appears to agree that with a complete squad, bench players are hyper aware of their mistakes and getting pulled. So he says how Udeh and Rice and Joe knew they were going to stay in b/c of the limited bench. My first thought was, "Coach, if you know that why not keep that mentality with a full complement of players?" To try to answer my question, I would say that he HCBS feels more comfortable with the "main" guys in the rotation...that playing them more gives his team a better shot at winning.
It just seems that if Udeh, Rice, and Joe were able to play as free when the team was whole, we'd still win at a high percentage (I mean those guys played that well against the #1 team in our league in a "must-win" type game). Also, they would develop more quickly.
But again, it's HCBS who gets the big bucks to make the magic happen.

Wow. Thanks for pointing this out. Definitely the guys need to play without fear of making a mistake and being pulled. No one operates well in that type of atmosphere. You have to be able to have a clear mind and if you make a mistake know that it's not going to get you in trouble. Heck if you made mistake after mistake that is one thing...hope he adapts to this realization.

Watching the Jayhawk Gameday Live post-game show last night and I was thinking the same thing as HCBS was saying this.
But afterwards Jeff Gueldner commented that such fear was what drove him — and most of the guys he played with that weren’t named Manning — to excel when given the chance.
That’s really where coaches earn their $$$ IMO — knowing which buttons, carrots and sticks work best with which player, and when to use the appropriate one.
As to ISWT, yep, I trust him to make the right choice 98% of the time — which still means there will be that ornery 2% he’ll have to deal with. After all, he’s great, but no one is perfect.
