At this rate they will be lucky to not be the 4th Bill Self KU team not to record at least 25 wins in the season.

This team is frustrating to watch. Poor starts, and just got manhandled today. KU should not be the game where teams get well. ISU blew a 23pt lead to freaking TTech, and the Hawks just bumble, stumble and throw away the game. ISU did not play like the GS Warriors, yet Hawks just wet the bed. Frustrating.. Spoiled KU fan warning, it is just plain not okay for UT , ISU, Ksuck, to be ahead of KU..don’t like it, don’t like that Ku is not its dominant self and HCBS needs to figure it out with the team.

I have a unique sense of calm this year. Expectations are sufficiently lowered, so losses don’t sting as bad, and wins are more appreciated.
To me, it’s a combo of a couple things. Overall players are just getting better at a younger age, and there are more players to spread around. Non blue bloods can get very talented players, as we’re seeing that at the majority of our fellow B12 schools. Our ability to overwhelm historically lower tiered programs is going away. So when we’re not elite, we’re just one of the pack.
The NCAA cloud for the past four years has come home to roost, specifically with our recruiting. Hopefully that’s about over. Self won last year with diamonds in the rough Ochai and Braun. Two almost unrecruited players. This year we have more of the same, but no diamonds like last year. Grady was a huge get, but we start KJ, Harris and McCullar to support JW. Those three are not elite (except Harris and Mac on the defensive side). They’re very good, but while defense wins championships, you also need a very good offense to go with the D. We simply don’t have that.
We are very easy to guard, having only to focus on JW and Grady, and if one or both of those two aren’t shooting lights out, then the rest have no ability to pick up the slack. When 3 or four of our guys are having a good night, we can beat anyone. But if only JW or Grady are on, we just don’t have the horses.
Hopefully Self works his magic and gets these guys ready for March, but as someone said here earlier, I wouldn’t be surprised if they make the final 4, or lose in the second round.
Either way, I’m not losing sleep this year.

AZHawk- a good perspective. I can appreciate a certain drop off with what the team lost, but this is where I wish HCBS would take the preseason/non-Conf to develop the bench. Injuries have come hurt the team with Cuffe, Martin, Rice, but why not give Udeh some time like Norm did in the first 4 games…alas HCBS has been so successful that these types of seasons while infrequent, are nonetheless frustrating imho.

Great perspective, AZhawk. This is precisely where I'm at, emotionally and expectation-wise, with this team.
We can't have elite seasons every year. (Sad but true) I think this holds especially true this season, coming on the heels of last year’s glory, and then losing all those scorers and solid players in the aftermath.
As I told HawkE offline Saturday after the Clone shellacking, I'm going to relish last year's ride to get me through this year’s turbulence and shortcomings. As you said, we could get drummed out in the 2nd round of the Dance, or maybe (if the chips really fell our way and we peaked at the right time) advance a little deep - but not to the NC.
I just hope we retain our best (highest-ceiling) players in the coming offseason. Namely, Gradey (draft), along with MJ, Ejiofor, Udeh, and Clemence (portal transfer threats). I feel good about Udeh and Ejiofor (not transferring out). Gradey (draft) and the other two are anyone’s guess.
PS: One very specific closing thought centers on Dajuan. Last year, when we had all that scoring and a dynamic outside-in offense, his style of play as a steady distributor on offense (and good defender) worked out great. But this year? Man oh man do we need a scoring point guard, a la Frank or Graham. I miss the latter kind of guard running the show - and that's typically where the college game has evolved to. If Harris had great, consistent scorers complementing him, he'd be fine, but without that, he's not great. And honestly, one thing that has begun to really bug me is how he often walks or slowly jogs the ball up the floor (rather than keeping things in a fast gear and putting the foe on their heels with aggression). Anyway, just some specific thoughts on him, as it relates to our current personnel grouping and tendencies.

Konza - agree with both AZHawk and yourself. My frustration with Saturday’s game was the lack of effort by anyone other than Wilson. HCBS even said that in his post game comments. This wasn’t a case of TCU morphing into the Golden State Warriors, the Hawks really just stunk up the place.

I think everyone's over reacting. Look back last year. I don't think any of us thought that team had a chance to cut down the nets. Especially after get spanked at home by Kentucky. Then it all clicked near the end. There were so many posts talking about how McCormick was weak. We had no real bench. Anyway. Let's just stick together and hope the team comes together to make a run. Looking at all the double digit losses by top 10 teams, this year is wide open.
Takes me back to 88 where we had a national player of the year and some solid support cast. Tell me you'd take anyone off that 88 team besides maybe Manning and Newton. Everyone else is incredibly more talented this year. We have to just hope they pull it together for six games.

While I can agree with most of what you wrote, replay, I would note that things came together late last year in large part because of one thing that is not present this year...
Remy's return to health and play made the difference late last year, especially in regional play where he was the Midwest Regional Most Outstanding Player. And his play in the FF was key as well, although those two games were Big Dave's turn, after playing hurt all year and finally getting back into a semblance of healthy condition, to shine. But even with Dave's heroics (he WAS the FF MOP!) this late play by Remy, never giving up on defense and getting the huge block on Love after being beat off the dribble, arguably was the game saver in the NC game.
Who will be this season's Remy and Dave, improving week to week to finally shine when it counted most?
This year, after the last couple of games we are seeing signs that the bench guys are finally finding their footing. Hopefully Joe Yesefu can contribute the rest of the way as he did tonight, showing a return to his 2021 NCAA tournament form. Hopefully freshmen Ernest Udeh, Jr and MJ Rice continue to improve as the season progresses, they were key tonight!
This group this year, when "ON", has shown they can beat anyone. And looking at tonight's game, I am feeling much, much better regarding our Jayhawk's prospects as we see signs of Joe Yes, Udeh and MJ rounding into late season winning form. Self being forced to play them more due to injuries may just be the best thing that could happen for our team to have any real chance at repeating as Big 12 and NCAA champions.

Great assessment. I agree. I hope we have someone step up as they do. Man there have been some amazingly encouraging signs from Udeh. And Joe is getting more and more aggressive. I look forward to this last push of games.
