Kirk played 13 years in the. NBA and earned $71 million in salary. What an amazing college and pro career.

I don’t remember, but was Kirk that big of a recruit at KU, or did he outperform all expectations over his career?

He was big, especially as he and Nick (the pair named co-Mr Iowa Basketball 1999) decided to come to KU to play for Roy after Tim Floyd left ISU for the NBA. I seem to recall they were not a package deal, and that only one of them was leaning toward ISU until Floyd left, but Floyd’s departure — and Raef Lafrentz’s recruiting decision 5 years earlier (saying he chose KU over Iowa because he felt he would be more able to reach his goals there) — tilted the recruiting table field in Roy and KU’s favor.

The only recruiting ranking I found with a quick search of the web had Drew Gooden 21, Nick Collison 22 and Kirk Hinrich 62.

I think one of Kirk's most famous game was when in the previous game he badly sprained his ankle and we all though he was done for the rest of NCAA playoffs. Two nights later he came out and played a heck of a game. I don't remember who the opponent was but I was in a bar at a convention and most of the people ended up cheering for KU that night.

I could always be wrong (just ask my wife) but I think that was Bill Self's Illini team.

Hoshi, if memory serves, I believe the second round opponent was Stanford.

It was not the Illini but could have been Stanford. I think it was in St Louis in 2002. "Mar 16, 2002 — No. 1 Jayhawks run Stanford out of St. Louis. Even with a bad ankle, Kirk Hinrich was a force for top-seeded Kansas"

A little more on Kirk & Nick.

Both were seriously looking at in state schools, but both the Iowa and ISU programs were in turmoil.

Kirk had actually committed — but not yet signed — to ISU. He reopened his recruitment after Floyd left for the Bulls. Kirk considered ISU, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Utah before opting to attend KU.

According to Nick’s dad (and HS coach) Dave, Nick had been interested in both Iowa and ISU. But Iowa recruiting was a mess after head coach Dr. Tom Davis announced (after losing in the first round of the April 1998 NIT) that he would be stepping down after 1998-99, the last season on his extant contract. And the Floyd to Chicago announcement scuttled recruiting a bit for ISU, even though they quickly reloaded with Utah State party animal coach Larry Eustachy. So Nick had focused his recruitment on Duke and Kansas, eventually choosing KU.

So what is arguably Roy’s greatest single recruiting class — Nick, Kirk and California kid Drew — came about in no small part because of the muddied waters at Iowa and ISU.

I can find nothing to indicate that after the Iowa schools were ruled out, Kirk & Nick opted for KU as a package deal. I do seem to recall that Kirk helped sway Nick to KU, but again, I have found no media info supporting that supposition.

Whether that happened or not, I’m glad they opted to become Jayhawks!
