"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"
“The following year she experienced her first basketball game in Lawrence, KS which was also Mitch Lightfoot’s first game as a Jayhawk.”

NB: Today was a truly historic day, the end of an era like no other in history.
The Queen is dead.
Long live the King!

Actually a commonly reported fact to start...
1. In her 70 years as Queen she worked with 16 Prime Ministers of the UK (but just 15 people in that role, as Harold Wilson served as PM twice, losing the job to Edward Heath in 1970 then returning to power after him in 1974).
Then a curiosity...
2. Sir Winston Churchill (b. November 30, 1874; d. January 24, 1965),was the PM when Elizabeth became queen on Feb 6,1952.
Liz Truss (b. July 26, 1975) was PM #16 when Elizabeth died on 8 Sep 2022.
Winnie was born almost 101 years before Liz was born (to be more precise 100 years and 8 months before Truss).
And finally a KU Nation -- nay, WORLD -- fact...
3. Note those bookend dates for the reign of Queen Elizabeth II - Feb 6, 1952 to Sep 8, 2022.
The KANSAS Men's Basketball team won the NCAA Tournament in
March 1952 and
April 2022
making the Jayhawks the first and last team to win the Men's NCAA Tournament during the 70 years of her reign.
During her 70+ year reign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was on the throne for 68 years and 10 months of my life before her death this week. I have to admit that so far -- and it probably will continue for a good while -- it seems strange waking up in a world where she is not The Queen -- a world where anywhere you went in the western world and much of the rest of it, when "The Queen" was mentioned in conversation it was almost always understood to be in reference to Elizabeth II. She was, by most accounts I have read, simply the most famous woman in the world.
