This piece by Path Forde on Sports Illustrated's site raises some interesting questions...

...and there's a lot of debate on his rankings' validity.

I started trying to find some information on how much revenue is generated by men's basketball at different schools and found some, but it was pretty spotty.
A lot of what I found focuses on the NCAA's distribution of March Madness tournament revenue, but from what I could find there's not much info or detail on other revenue.
It seems like the bigger programs UNC, Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Villanova and KU (and that's just from some cursory research) generate 10's of millions in revenue and the average across all programs is in the mid 7 figures.
I thought I'd put this out there to see if anyone has ever found a good resource for finding men's basketball revenue for NCAA D-1 programs. If you have, could you please share.

After posting, I realized that I should have included a little more explanation. In the piece, the rankings are based on 3 football criteria, USNews& World Report academic rankings, and Learfield Directors’ Cup non-football (and men's basketball) sports rankings. Men's basketball (2nd largest college revenue generating sport?!) is left out of the criteria. That's what led me to start digging into what value does men's basketball have in the realignment melee happening now.

2. USN&WR best colleges ranking is the original and the largest, but the questioning of its methodology (primary sources are self-reported institution and self-reported student inputs) has spawned competitors over the years (see this article for more on that subject).

4. The SI P5 ranking uses 5 variables, 3 of which are football based. After the last 12 years no way KU ends up anywhere but at or near the bottom of that list. But then this is to be expected because...
