It dawned on me last night how ineffective the transfer portal has been for KU. IMO Self just can’t get past players who don’t buy completely into his system, and OADs and portal guys just don’t seem to ever really fit.
Remi - 2X PAC 12 POY, but can’t score in our offense and doesn’t play D up to Self standards. That means his best game in AFH will be when he dropped 28 against us and beat us at home.
JCL - three point specialist which means he won’t play more than 5 min due to lack of defensive “whatever” needed to play for Self
Yesufu - another offensive guy struggling to get minutes
Cam Martin - 3X DII all American who won’t play one second for us this year.
Overall the portal has provided almost nothing for us. Throw in that we get zilch from our freshman class, and we’re left with players who have multiple years in Self’s system logging all the minutes, despite some fairly significant holes in their game.
We’ll see how far we go with a PG who doesn’t score (and who’s pesky defense seems to have dropped a level or two), a 5 who is better from 8 feet than he is from 2 feet. And our all American POY candidate who now has to work his tail off just to get a semi open shot.
