"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"
The University of Kansas Libraries University Archives has started digitizing its extensive film and video collections.
KU Libraries: University Archives Videos
Included in the first two pages of videos and film to be placed online are 3 KU Hoops games from 1940, 1947 and 1949..
1940-03-22 NCAA Western Region playoff in KCMO's Municipal Auditorium, KU v Rice.
The second year of the NCAA Tournament, just 8 teams and just 3 wins to win it all. The year of Phog's first Final Four and NCAA title game. Kansas beat Rice and Southern Cal before falling in the finals to Branch McCracken's Indiana Hoosiers. (McCracken was Phog's bane, beating Phog's Jayhawks in the title game in 1940 and again in 1953 when the Jayhawks almost repeated their 1952 triumph.)
Unfortunately the 2nd and 3rd games are KU losses, but they provide a look at playing in old Hoch Auditorium.
Back then they put stands on the stage and put the court down between the stage and the first rows of floor seating. I'm not certain, but from the looks of it the first few rows of floor seating were removable to accommodate the court for games until AFH was built. Anyone know for sure?
1947-12-13: KU hosts Nortre Dame University
1949-02-12: KU hosts Nebraska

Really fun to watch.
They’re running the same top weave that Self uses today. Were they revolutionary, or is Self secretly 100 years old and learned it from Phog himself?
None of them would play for Self today, as they chuck up shots from NBA three point land at will. I swear I saw Brannon Greene playing there. The few sequences where they get it inside shows that most were unable to get a shot off without being blocked or fouled.
The most surprising thing was how bad they were at shooting. I know the game was new, but you give anyone a basketball today who hadn’t played before and after about ten shots they would dial it in and at least hit the rim. Many of these shots hit high off the top of the backboard or were so strong they bounced off the board and caromed far away from the hoop. At least they made most of their free throws (most underhanded!)

No numerals on the dark jerseys?
No sound? Would have liked to hear Dickie V in his prime. Diaper dandy. He's a P T P-er. Super, scintillating, sensational.
Wish the camera operator had more consistently shown the basket on the right. Lots of shots taken, but couldn't tell if they went in or not.

“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”
1936 inscription on the portrait of Dr. Naismith, displayed above Phog Allen's office desk at KU.
I read HE's opening post and went straight to the video clips. Literally the first thing I thought of in watching the ND game was "Holy crap, we're STILL running that weave!" lol
Came on here to post it and saw your mind went there too. Nice Sunday morning laugh...
