If you were paying attention last Monday and Tuesday to what was happening around the Big12, you noticed that when tu came to Lubbock former TT head coach Chris Beard was not treated nicely. Starting with the “welcoming” of the tu bus when it arrived on Monday by some members of the TT fan base, it continued into a reported and since denied confrontation between TTHC Mark Adams and Beard that night.

And of course it continued on game night on Tuesday.

Just about everyone I’ve read commenting on the fan behavior described it — at best — as over the top. Sure, Beard left Tech for Texas (his alma mater), but he did great while at Tech and almost brought home a national title. Now Rumor Control has indications that the feelings are as much about *how* Beard left as the fact that he left (does any of this sound vaguely familiar, Jayhawk fans?).

Reading through some commentary posted on JayhawkSlant (the other KU fan site I frequent), I came upon some posts from a historically reliable and valid Slant member. He has insider contacts throughout the Big 12, and in the past has provided commentary whose details seldom made the mainstream media, but did help with understanding what was allegedly happening behind the scenes. I’ve pieced together his comments from a thread on the TT “welcoming” of Beard and reproduced it here verbatim so as to minimize any “telephone tag” errata.

Submitted for your consideration…

I thought it was just bitterness that he went to UT…over the top petty. I figured they were just being snarky about it.

There’s been some weird information that’s started to leak out about how he left Tech that makes me feel like it’s not completely pettiness. It’s still way over the top, but they may have some reason to be angry that has nothing to do with him going to UT and everything to do with his actions on the way out the door.

I’ve only heard smoke but heard it from a couple different people in a couple of different spots. There’s the obvious taking of the UT job the day the buyout reduced by a million dollars. That’s unpleasant but known.

The rumors that just started popping up are related to the computers/technology that they had at Texas Tech. Allegedly, Beard confiscated everything before he accepted the position. It was eventually returned, but he had wiped EVERYTHING. Tech’s entire recruit scouting research (video, names, offers, contact information, etc.) was wiped. Their SM DM’s were wiped. All of their digital game film and opponent scouting was wiped. That’s dirty, scorched Earth stuff.

There’s also some rumors floating about threats to burn coaches/support staff that didn’t want to follow. Don’t know that I buy that one.

Might explain whatever dustup between him and Adams prior to the game.

If true, Beard basically lit a match on his way out of the building.
