Corpus, a related but slightly different query…

Self v UK is 7-4 while at KU, 7-5 overall per KUAD pregame notes.
They do not indicate who he was coaching when he incurred his first loss.
Who was it?

Calipari at UK is shown as being 4-4 v KU.
Obviously he is at least 4-5 (see 2008).
If he has ever coached against KU besides those 9 games, what teams were they and what is his total “v. KU” record?

HE, Calipari has coached 11 games against KU. 7 wins 4 losses (for Kansas). Or 4-7 for Calipari.

UMass 2 games, both losses to UMass (wins for KU) in 1994 and 1995 seasons. Both neutral sites (Madison Square Garden and The Pond in Anaheim.

Memphis - 1 game I think we all know about that game.

Kentucky - 8 games. 4 wins 4 losses. 7 in regular season and 1 in the NCAA (2012). We obviously lost in the NCAA and we all remember that game. KU is 1-1 in games in Lexington against Cal, 1-0 in Lawrence and 2-2 in neutral sites (regular season games) all Champions Classic games.

Self lost to Kentucky as coach at Tulsa in December 1997 74-53.

Thanks, Corpus!

I figured with your database you could do it in a snap.

FYI, once I got home I finally had some time about a hour ago to check on my own (I like to keep my hand in when it's not too time involving), so I just finished coming to the same #s for Squid that you have.

I did not research whether Self lost to UK at Illinois or at Tulsa, so your dig there completely closes that loose end.

Thanks again!

HE

HE, last year I decided to buy game data back to 1949. But it did not include coaches. So I spent a pretty significant amount of time researching all coaches back to 1895. Some of that was easy and straightforward but some took some real sleuthing. So I think I have the coaches for every team back to 1895. I had to mine a number of sites to get that data. So I am glad I actually get to put it to use.

All coaches of all past and present D1 equivalent programs from the inception of the game in the college ranks?:pinch:

Glad to make the effort pay off, Corpus! I have some small idea of how much of a slog that Coach research was!

Happy to oblige with more questions in the future, too, as they arise, old friend!

Thanks again!

When I was mining all that data I had the idea of doing a list of greatest coaching names. As you can imagine there have been some pretty colorful names over the years. I thought it would be fun to do a list of some of the most interesting names. I just haven’t ever got around to doing that. I mean Digger Phelps and Phog Allen are mild in comparison to some of the interesting names. Maybe when I get a chance I will do that.
