KUSports.com - Tait: Kansas freshman Bobby Pettiford to miss time with nagging abdominal injury
Probably 4-5 weeks for it to heal.

According to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance, Scott Young, “the NCAA has two requirements for a medical redshirt; the injury must have occurred in the first half of the season, and the athlete must have competed in less than 30 percent of the season."
KANSAS has only played 7 out of a scheduled 31 regular season games, so he would meet both requirements if he is still looking at this come the middle of January.

"When I was a freshman, I remember Coach Naismith telling us how important it was to play good defense." - Mitch Lightfoot
While there's no "ideal" time to be out, now isn't the worst time. If he's out a month, he'll still be back in time for almost all the conference games. Threre's also some built in "down time" for the team for finals and the holidays, so that means he'd miss "less" than at another time.
Good kid. Fun to watch. Redshirt isn't a bad option, but a lot of that would depend on how much slack the rest of the bench can pick up in his absence. Self might want/need him back for the stretch.
Any idea how long they can hold out to make a decision? Longer would obviously be better in this case.

Info in the earlier comment indicates 2 factors
1. injury has to occur in first half of the season. ISU in AFH on Tuesday Jan 11 is game 16, halfway thru the 31 game regular season. If he plays after that he might not be able to redshirt, unless playing reveals he still can’t go due to the earlier injury just not healing.
2. If he plays in more than 9 games (.30 x 31), he can’t redshirt. He’s played in 6 so far according to KUAthletics.com, so he can play in 3 more games up to JAN 11 and still apply for a medical redshirt.
If he does take 4 weeks, he would be returning in time for the away games at OK St on Tue JAN 4 and/or TT on Sat JAN 8.
I would think Self will try to play him at least one more time a game or two before ISU in AFH, and if BP still isn’t where he needs to be, then opt to sit him for the season so he can fully recover and apply for the medical RS without having to worry about crossing the halfway line.
