The AP Poll first appeared on January 18th, 1949. It was the top 20 teams in the country. Of course, there were 168 Division 1 teams that season. The poll for reasons I do not know, was reduced to 10 teams for the January 3, 1961 poll (the middle of the 1960-61season). It was increased back to the top 20 at the beginning of the 1968-69 season. Then, at the beginning of the 1989-90 season it was increased to the top 25 where it remains today. Meanwhile, the number of Division 1 teams has steadily increased from the 168 teams in 1949 to 358 this season.

-- There have been 1224 AP weekly polls counting the one that came out today.
-- 205 schools have appeared in the AP Poll (that surprised me a little to the low side)
-- UNC has appeared in the most polls (930) followed by Kentucky (925), Duke (846) and Kansas (806), UCLA (704), Louisville 658 and Indiana (560)
-- Duke has been ranked No. 1 the most at 144 weeks followed by UCLA (135), Kentucky (125), UNC (109), Kansas (73), Indiana (54) and Cincinnati (45)
-- Kansas has the longest streak at 231 straight weeks (which ended las season)
-- Gonzaga is about to join the 100 week streak club. They have currently been in 98 straight polls so in 2 weeks they will be in their 100th straight poll.

Here is a trivia test. Gonzaga will be the 10th school to attain to a 100 week streak in the AP poll. Obviously Kansas (1st with 231), UCLA (2nd with 221), Duke (3rd with 200), UNC (4th with 172) and Kentucky (6th with 164) are in this group of 10. Who is currently in;

5th at 166
7th at 141
8th at 120
9th at 110

9th place may really surprise you?

Hey jayt, I wasn't considering repeats so no trick question. There are several schools that have had more than one string of 100+ weeks in the poll but I was just considering each schools max string. Here are the answers.

5th at 166 Marquette (recall the great run by the HOF'er Al McGuire?)
7th at 141 Arizona (Lute Olson had Arizona on top for many years)
8th at 120 Syracuse (Not too surprising)
9th at 110 Stanford (big surprise to me. Mike Montgomery really had Stanford on a roll from 1996-2002)

This was going to be what I said and I only had Syracuse correct in the list. I really should have gotten UA.

That is way too hard for me. Some teams that I think would be on that list that have not been mentioned yet are Syracuse and Georgetown. I do not think Tark had that long of a run at UNLV nor Billy Donovan at Florida.
