"When I was a freshman, I remember Coach Naismith telling us how important it was to play good defense." - Mitch Lightfoot
It's always hard to judge games like last night's where one team clearly has more talent than the other. Nevertheless, I think there are some good things to point to from last night. Here are some random thoughts:
>Agbaji: not much to say here beyond the obvious. He's clearly off to a great start and caught fire again last night. I found it a little funny that they were talking about him as the top scorer in the country after only 2 games. Granted anybody who drops 29 on a Tom Izzo team deserves some credit, but there are a LOT of guys who could get 25 vs. Tarelton, so Agbaji is certainly being helped by some fortunate scheduling. Nevertheless, the numbers are real enough and the "eyeball test" certainly shows that he's gotten better. He's shooting well, and he can get to the rim. Throw in freakish athleticism and he has all the tools. You can't lay off him on the perimeter, but if you get in close, he'll blow past you. What WILL be interesting to see is how he reacts once good teams put their top defender(s) on him. In the meantime, it's good that he's building his confidence and getting lots of reps.
>McCormack: poor fella. I really feel for him. You can see how frustrated he is and I totally get it. All these little fellas swatting away at you, and he's speeding up. There was one sequence where he finally got angry and muscled up on a shot and rebound and some bodies went flying. That's a good sign. You know what, he still got 12 points and 8 boards in only 15 minutes. All I can say here is I'm glad he's getting this out of his system now. Just like Agbaji "turned on a switch" in his head this year and is channeling his physical talents efficiently and effectively, I think that's all that has to happen with David. Once he realizes (or remembers) what he's capable of, I think he'll be just fine and muscle memory will take over. Kid has plenty of heart. Get it out of your system against the Tareletons and Stoney Brooks.
>Clemence: Big man tied for the highest 3 point % of the game making 2 for 4, and was 2nd only to Agbaji for total 3's made. Seems like a very smart player to boot. Didn't play much, but was super efficient with his time when he was out there. Total entertainment. Wonder if we can keep him for 20 years like Mitch.
>Harris vs. Martin: talk was huge about Martin coming in and I'm still a fan, but right now Harris is playing much better and seems to be more of a leader.
Overall, it seems clear that the slow start was partly due to the plan of "get McCormack going" and it didn't work out so well, combined with Stoney Brook hitting a lot of early 3's. That wasn't going to last, especially with KU's defense forcing Stoney Brook to run out of shot clock on a frequent basis.

First, in H1 Martin tweaked a back problem he’s be dealing with, which is why he played so little yesterday and was such a non-factor.
Second, IMO “Harris v Martin” is a fan competition that has never been a serious thing with Self. He has historically preferred to have 2 PGs on the court, and is going to have it whenever he can get it. I’ve read a lot of fans thinking (and I use that word loosely in this case) that Harris will not start once JWil is back because Self will start Braun over Harris. Self’s recent comments make it clear he knows and values what he has in Harris, and that DH will play because his teams win, regardless of what DH’s personal stats look like. He’s an aggressive defender and offensively just makes everyone around him better.
Self on Dajuan Harris

Good points, HE. Forgot about the back tweak.
Nice to have enough depth that you can have a guy like that have a night off and not miss it.
