“Secure the lifeboats for now.
We’ve patched the ship up to make her seaworthy for the future, even though it won’t be the future we had planned.
But keep those lifeboats in top condition in case we encounter an offer of a new home port!”
- every Big 12 Chancellor/President and AD worth his/her salt.

CBSSports.com: Big 12 to add BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF after they formally accept invitations to join conference.
BYU will join the Big 12 in the 2023-24 academic year while Cincinnati, Houston and UCF will leave the AAC no later than July 2024
Today the word is "not later than July 2024" for the 3 AAC schools, but as the article notes "... the programs will likely pay a slightly higher exit fee to get out in advance of the 2023 season. UConn, for example, paid $17 million to get out of its AAC contract early."
So make note, the Big 12 is projected to go to 14 for two seasons, 2023-24 and 2024-25, unless OUT work out leaving earlier than 2025.
So it's official.

This B12 expansion story fails to generate any excitement for me. It's actually a little sad.
It feels like we're part of the JV team who didn't get picked to play varsity, so we just sit in the stands and watch the cheerleaders who are only watching the varsity and paying no attention to us.

KU is the only flagship from the Big 8 remaining. It seems like the horrid football and the quirks of governance of higher education in Kansas have made it tough for KU to get to the adult table.
The four additions are currently doing well at football. Cincinnati and Houston have hoops history. It seems the urban universities are becoming more prominent.
