This years team has the potential to be a real winner. We have depth (schmepth), we have talent and we have a ton of experience. But after reading the latest article in the LJW about Ochai, I realized this team has something else that while not unusual, seems to be a little more weighty with this team than usual. Perhaps that is because of the great wealth of experience with 6 seniors (not counting walk-ons) 1 junior and 3 sophomores. That something is personal character. Okay maybe that is not exactly the term I am looking for but something like that. I have assessed Ochai as a 3rd or 4th option and a limited player. But there is one thing I have always believed about Ochai. He is a stellar young man. Now full disclosure, I have no info on these guys other than the impressions I get from watching them like any fan. And I don’t live in the Lawrence or KC area so I don’t even get a lot of info others may get. But it seems based on my assessment that for the last 3+ years Ochai has been nothing short of a very fine young man. But it doesn’t stop there. From the very time I saw David McCormack being interviewed, I was struck by his class. His last 3+ years have only added to that. He is indeed an impressive young man. At KU we have been blesses to have many Jayhawks who bleed Crimson and Blue. But I am not sure if any can top Mitch Lightfoot. Mitch has been a very fun guy to watch when he gets on the floor since he gives absolute 100% 100% of the time. But Mitch is as Crimson and Blue as they come. And Christian in his 2+ years has shown a similar trajectory as David and Ochai. A true crimson and blue classy young man. Jalen Wilson is a sophomore but is in his 3rd year at KU ditto for Dajuan. Both have patiently endured trials and have waited their chance to contribute. They are a bit younger but seem by all accounts to be solid young men. JCL, Remy Martin and Cam Martin are newcomers but long in experience. It would be disingenuous to put them in a true blue KU category, but they seem to be mature young men. As I said, we have had some great mature, experienced and solid citizen teams. I recall the Frank Mason/Landon Lucas senior season. Or the season with Tyshawn Taylor as a senior and Kevin Young and Travis Releford. Or the 2008 Nc team was stellar. This team will show us over the next 9 months how good they are, but at this point it is shaping up to being a real classy team.
