I posted earlier the records of the 29 coaches with 40 or more NCAA tourney victories and how they compared to their projected victories. Self was well above average for all coaches but was below average for the elite coaches. But what about regular season. Shouldn't Self's record stack up pretty well since he is the winningest coach of the last 20 years. Well the answer is an emphatic yes, Self is one of the greatest all-time in terms or regular season wins versus projected wins. In fact, of the 99 coaches since 1950 who have won 400 or more games, Self ranks No. 2 only behind Lou Carnesecca. Mark Few, who ranks well below Self in the NCAA tournament looks very good in the regular season ranking at 5th out of 99 but still below Self. Bill Self has won 107.7% of the games he was projected to win. That is amazing. The average for this elite group is 104.0%. Coach K is just above the average of this elite group at 104.1%. There is little doubt that Self is one of the best regular season coaches ever. Larry Brown, who is truly one of the master in the NCAA tournament ranks at 102.9% for the regular season.
Some notable names on the other end of the spectrum are
Jim Woodridge -- 94.1%
Porter Moser -- 97.5%
Ricardo Patton -- 98%
Hugh Durham -- 98.9%
Ritchie McKay -- 99.0%
While Texas got significantly better with Chris Beard, Oklahoma may have gotten worse with Porter Moser.
