We are coming up on the anniversary of the death (April 24th) of one of, if not the, greatest athletes to don a KU jersey. That is, of course, the incomparable Ray Evans. He successfully played professional basketball and football and even received an offer to play for the New York Yankees. I think he still holds the record for season and career interceptions at Kansas. He earned All-American honors at Kansas in basketball and football, rarified air indeed. As if that were not enough, he sacrificed 3 years of his life to serve in the Army Air Corps during WWII. For the rest of his life he was a beloved and highly respected mentor, advisor, friend and benefactor to KU in many regards. He was reputed to be a man of unparalleled character and sincere humility. Oh that we had more men like him today. Truly one of the greatest ever to play at Kansas. I think that 1943 basketball team at Kansas was a very special one indeed with Charlie Black (a decorated war hero), Ray Evans and Otto Schnellbacher (also a 2 sport star).
