Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!
1. 1st year was 1939 with 8 teams in 1 region.
2. Regions -- Started with a single region in 1939. Went to 2 regions in 1941, and 4 in 1952.
3. Teams -- started with 8 teams from 1939 through 1950. In 1951 and 1952 it had 16 teams. From 1953 through 1974 it had between 22 and 25 teams. In 1975 it expanded to 32 teams through 1978. Then it went to 40, then 48 in 1980 and stayed 48 through 1982. In 1983 there were 52 and in 1984 there were 53 before going to 64 in 1985. It was expanded to 65 in 2001 and then the current 68 in 2011.
4. 3rd place games -- From 1939 through 1975 there were regional 3rd place games. The Final Four kept the 3rd place games a few years longer until 1981. I wish they would bring that back for both the regional and the Final Four.

I really like #12!
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain "Innocents Abroad"

One can hope that KU gets the opportunity this year to add that total cited in factoid #12.
