Last time KU didn't reach the 20 wins mark was 1989, Roy's first year, when they finished the season 19-12 and had no post-season thanks to the NCAA violations (both FB & MBB) that led to the only time in modern NCAA MBB history that the defending National Champion did not get a chance to defend its title. The ONLY season under Larry Brown, Roy Williams and Bill Self that KU did not win at least 20 games.
What really was irksome (if you recall) was that UNLV got dinged soon after, but the punishment for the defending 1990 National Champion and 1991 top team in the country (and everyone's prohibitive favorite to win it all, and the 34-1 Running Rebs almost did, their unbeaten season ended by Duke in the Final Four) was put off until the end of the following year so they could play.
Still chaps my hide to this day.
