To recap,
Last season ended thusly...

Phog -89 and counting...

16 straight winning streak.
WON-LOST
as KU HC NAME (W-L%) CAREER (W-L%)
1. 590-219 Phog Allen (.729) 746-264 (.739)
2. 501-109 BILL SELF (.821) 708-214 (.768)
89 = Wins to tie Phog as winningest Head Coach in KANSAS history.

SELF'S PROJECTED "PASS YEAR": AY2022-23
The "Pass Year" projection for Bill passing Phog as the all-time winningest KU coach assumes KU averages 30 wins a season from the AY2020-21 season on, and that he will continue to coach for KU beyond his current contract, which ends with the AY2021-22 season.
See KUSports.com: How much longer will Bill Self coach? by Matt Tait.
More recently, see
KC Star: KU coach Bill Self addresses NBA rumors: ‘I look forward to being here for a long time’ by Sam Mellinger.

NB:
AY2019-20 final record was 28-3 since there was no postseason play.
COVID19 makes it more likely that it will be the AY2023-2024 season when Self passes Phog.

A 58-57 road win squeaker at Tech is a great way to start the conference season and brings KU's season record to 7-1/1-0.

If someone told me KU would crush the Mountaineers in the second half to run away with the game I would have asked for the name of the drug and his dealer. The Jayhawks easily defeat WVU in the AFH Big 12 opener to push their record to 8-1 (2-0) and put Bill one win closer to Phog.

At least for tonight, Kentucky's lead in all-time wins is down to single digits. Nice.:)

78 = Wins to tie Phog as winningest Head Coach in KANSAS history.

SELF'S PROJECTED "PASS YEAR": AY2023-24
The original AY2022-23 "Pass Year" projection for Bill passing Phog as the all-time winningest KU coach assumed KU continued to average 30 wins a season from the AY2020-21 season on, and that Bill would continue to coach for KU beyond his current contract, which ends with the AY2021-22 season. With COVID19 and what looks like it will be a down year in AY2020-21, I changed the projected pass year to AY2023-24.

NB:
AY2019-20 final record was 28-3 as there was no postseason play.
