Several years ago someone posited that Self's teams may struggle on the Saturday/Monday games or when they have back to back. A potential implication being that Self is not as good at preparing a team with little time to prepare. So I updated the stats for that. The data actually shows that there is not a lot of difference one way or the other and if you were forced to draw a conclusion you would surmise the exact opposite. If you limit the games to conference only (this gives you a reasonable assumption of normalization of opponent) the data looks like this;
2 day -- 53-12 for 81.5%
3 day -- 69-17 for 80.2%
4-day -- 58-8 for 87.9%
5 day -- 45-13 for 77.6%
6 or more days -- 8-3 for 72.7%
All conference games -- 233-53 for 81.5%
Now there is one variable that seems to be very very significant and valid. If you look at the 2 day turnaround games where the 2nd game is at home vs. road the results are eye-popping.
2nd game at home: 45-0 for 100%
2nd game not at home -- 37-23 for 61.7%
Wow, that is a big difference. But then when you consider the overall records it softens the starkness;
Home: 248-14 for 94.7%
Non-Home -- 235-93 for 71.6%
Still we clearly have a slight problem with 2 game turnarounds where the second game is not in Allen Fieldhouse. Just to show the other data (3 or more day turnaround) for Home and non-home;
3 day turnaround
Home: 63-3 for 95.4%
Non-Home: 46-19 for 70.8%
4 day turnaround
Home: 62-3 for 95.4%
Non-Home: 46-14 for 74.2%
5 or more day turnaround
Home: 77-8 for 90.6%
Non-Home: 76-24 for 76%
The only aberration is the 2 day turnaround. Let's hope that stat doesn't mean anything for this afternoon's game.
Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!
