Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!
If my records are correct, the No. 1 team has been defeated 318 times. Here are some trivia about defeating No. 1
1. 318 times, 58 on home court (of No. 1 team), 159 on challengers court and 101 times on neutral court.
2. The KU win marked the 3rd time this season a No. 1 team was defeated on their home court (Duke and Kentucky). This happened 3 times last season and also in 2017 and 2009. The record for No. 1 teams being defeated on their home court was set in 2000 when Stanford and Cincinnati both lost twice on their home court as No. 1's.
3. New York has seen the most upsets of No. 1 (20 times) followed by Lexington, KY (12 times), Los Angeles (11 times), Chapel Hill (11) and Durham (10).
4. More than half of the upsets of No. 1 have come at the hands of unranked teams (165 of 318)
5. UNC has defeated No. 1 the most at 14 times, followed by UCLA (12), Maryland (10), Duke (9), Ohio St. (9), Kansas (9), Kentucky (9)
6. Ohio St. has defeated No. 1 the most times as an unranked team (, followed by Maryland (7), Georgia Tech (6), Vanderbilt (6) and UCLA (6).
7. Maryland and Vandy hold the distinction of defeating the same No. 1 team the most times. Maryland has defeated UNC 4 times and Vandy has defeated Kentucky 4 times.
8. Duke has been upset the most times (39) followed by UNC (32), Kentucky (31), Kansas (22) and UCLA (15)
9. UNC has been upset the most at home (7) followed by Duke (6), Stanford (4), UConn (4) and Kansas (4). Can you recall who upset KU at home?
10. Chaminade defeating Virginia is the only non-division 1 school to defeat a No. 1 team.
11. 94 teams have upset the No. 1 team.
12. 10 is the most times a No. 1 has been defeated in a single season (1993-94) (UNC was defeated 4 times as a No. 1 that season and Arkansas was defeated twice)
13. Only 5 seasons have had zero times a No. 1 was upset (1956, 1967, 1972, 1973 & 1976)
Kansas Trivia
1. 2 teams have defeated KU twice as No. 1 and 2 teams have defeated KU 3 times as No. 1. Can you identify those teams.
2. Other than the 4 home losses, KU has been upset as No. 1 more than once in 4 cities. Can you name those cities?
3. Of the 22 times KU has been upset as the No. 1 team, there are 2 seasons where we lost 3 times as the No. 1 team. Can you identify those 2 season?
4. Kansas has been upset 8 times by unranked teams. Can you identify them? Clue: 5 conference, 3 non-con and 4 under Roy and 4 under Bill.
5. KU upset the No. 1 ranked team when KU was unranked. Can you name the team we upset? Clue: the following week we set a record for the biggest jump into the polls, going from unranked to ranked No. 4 the next week.

Good job LKF. You are close. Here are the answers.
1. Villanova and K-States have upset No. 1 Kansas twice each. Mizzou and Oklahoma have done so 3 times each.
2. No. 1 Kansas has been upset twice in Columbia , MO, Kansas City, Los Angeles and Norman, OK.
3. Our first loss as No. 1 was in 1957 by Iowa St. The next time we were upset as No. 1 was 1990 when we were beaten 3 times as the No. 1 team. Twice by Mizzou and once by Oklahoma. We were upset once in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996, twice in 1997, twice in 2002 and once in 2004. Then in 2010 we were upset three times. The last was by Northern Iowa in the tourney. Ouch. That one still hurts. Finally we were upset in 2011, twice in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
4. Here are the unranked teams to upset Kansas.
-- Long Beach St. in Lawrence in 1993 (coached by Seth Greenburg)
-- Kansas St. in 1994 in Lawrence
-- Temple in 1996 in East Rutherford, NJ.
-- Mizzou in 1997 in Columbia
-- Northern Iowa in 2010 in OKC
-- Oklahoma St. in 2010 in Stillwater
-- Kansas St. in 2011 in Manhattan
-- TCU in 2017 in Kansas City (last place in the Big 12 TCU to boot)
5. On November 22, 1989, unranked Kansas played unanimous No. 1 UNLV in New York. We pummeled them 91-77. We went from unranked to 4th in the next poll. UNLV never made it back to No. 1 but Kansas did for 4 weeks. Recall, 1990 is the year we were upset as No. 1 3 times.

As the TCU loss reminds me even the bottom teams in the Big 12 can beat the top teams if the top team does not bring it hard. I hope the Hawks remember this tonight because Ok St is playing much better than they were last time we played them.
