Saturday is a cold and windy winter storm warning day in Lawrence as our #3 Jayhawks host the #4 Baylor Bears for another ALLEN FIELDHOUSE...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

Our Jayhawks (12-2, 2-0) and the Bears (12-1, 2-0) tip off at 12 p.m. (CT) on CBS, Brad Nessler (play-by-play) and Bill Raftery (analyst) our talking heads.

CBSSports.com: College Basketball Rankings (AP, Coaches, CBS 25+1, NET)

ESPN.com Game Preview: #3 Kansas will lean on D against #4 Baylor
ESPN's Basketball Power Index favors Kansas 80.9% to 19.1%, with an estimated 8.2 point winning margin.

KUAthletics: Game Preview #3 KU hosts #4 Baylor
KUAthletics.com Game Day Notes
NB: The Game Day Notes are darned impressive. Forty three (43!) pages that comprise a media – and fan – mini-mother lode of KU -- and Baylor -- info. Check it out! Included below are some of the current neato keeno tidbits for ya! (Is it not nifty?)

• Kansas is 32-5 vs Baylor, having yet to lose in Lawrence (16-0 AFH; 1-0 in Hoch Auditorium on Dec 3, 1951)
• Kansas has won two straight and 13 of the last 14 Baylor games.
• KU has won nine-straight contests against Associated Press top-five foes in Allen Fieldhouse, with eight of those under Bill Self.
• Kansas is 14-2 (87.5%) against AP top-10 teams in Lawrence under Bill Self the best winning percentage in the NCAA since 2003-04.
• Kansas is the top-scoring team in the Big 12 at 79.4 points per game, while Baylor is first in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 58.4 ppg. KU is first in scoring margin at +18.4, while BU is second at +15.9.
• KU is ranked No. 1 in the NET rankings through games of Jan. 9. The Jayhawks’ strength of schedule is also No. 1 nationally. Kansas is the only school with five Quadrant 1 wins. KU is 5-2 against Q1.
• KU ranks second nationally with a 28-game home court winning streak. Gonzaga leads the nation at 32 and VCU is third at 21.
• Kansas has been ranked in each of the last 210 Associated Press polls, the longest streak in the nation. The Jayhawks have also been inside the top-10 in 95 of the last 109 AP polls.
• Kansas’ two losses in 2019-20 have been by a combined three points and both against ranked foes.
• With its win over West Virginia on Jan. 4, KU won its conference opener for the 29th-consecutive season, a streak which started in 1991-92.
• Through 13 games, five different Jayhawks – Devon Dotson, Isaiah Moss, Udoka Azubuike, Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack – have posted 20 or more points in a game this season.

LET'S GO JAYHAWKS!

OBTW, this tidbit?
• With its win over West Virginia on Jan. 4, KU won its conference opener for the 29th-consecutive season, a streak which started in 1991-92.

Here's a little follow on from the ISU game, which was the first *road* game of the conference season for KU -- and we know how critical getting a leg up on the road is to winning the conference title.

In that same period, 1991-92 through this season, KU has won 28 of its 29 first conference road games, the sole loss in that time coming last year in Hilton.

Looking at the modern era of KUMBB (1983-84 season to present, 37 conference season road openers), KU has won 33 of 37 conference road openers.

In his 15 seasons at KANSAS (1988-89 thru 2002-03), Roy's Boys never lost a conference road opener.
Bill's Jayhawks have only lost once in 17 seasons.
Larry's Jayhawks lost 3 of the 5 opportunities they had from 1983-84 through 1987-88.

The major common factor in these 4 losses?

Only one of them -- Larry's loss to Billy Tubbs' OU Sooners back in 1985 -- was NOT a loss to ISU.

The remaining 3 losses -- Bill's 1 last year and Larry's other 2 in 1984 and 1988 -- were to ISU in Hilton, the only conference arena where Larry (5 tries) and Danny (4 tries) never won.

I don't know about you, but for me this info makes the Wednesday win in Hilton even more satisfying, especially after losing the conference road opener in Hilton last year to interrupt what would otherwise have been a 32 year winning streak starting in Roy's first year at the helm.

Bah humbug!

Congrats to Baylor and Drew for finally winning one in Lawrence. BU had been 0-17 in Lawrence -- 0-1 in Hoch in a 1951 game and 0-16 in AFH before today. Drew showed he can actually coach man-to-man defense and coach it well.

Meanwhile, in schadenfreude news today Clemson stunned host UNC after going 0-for-59 in Chapel Hill. Kinda makes Baylor's skid seem insignificant in comparison -- except, of course, that BU is a really good team this year that finally won a game in Lawrence, while Clemson is still really the same old Clemson, but they played what is shaping up to be one of the poorer UNC teams in recent history.

After the game Roy said "We've had some great moments as a coach and right now I'd say this is my lowest one because losing this game was my fault."

I predict he'll have a lower one if this tarred ones team delivers his first ever losing record in 32 years as a D1 head coach.

Time will tell.

... and our lads from Lawrence look to chalk one up in the Win column in Lloyd Noble Arena on just their second Big 12 Conference road game...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

8:00 PM CT on ESPN, KU (12-3, 2-1) @ OU (11-4, 2-1). Game voices will be Jon Sciambi (play-by-play) and Jay Bilas (analyst). Since this is an ESPN event, I'm hoping there will be a pregame show on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, but there may not be as it is a road game, and I do not see a listing for one on the ESPN+ app as I write this.

Oklahoma is coming off an 81-68 loss at Iowa State that snapped a four-game winning streak.

This OU game is the first of two games on the road for Kansas this week. KU plays at Texas on Saturday (ESPN 1 PM CT).

The ESPN pregame matchup prediction favors KU over OU by 6.5 points, 75% to 25%

More fun stuff courtesy of KU Athletics and ESPN

Lots of good stuff in both KUAthletics postings, with some of the media Game Notes repeated in easier to read form in the Game Preview posting. Really good stuff!

Saturday may be a cold, clear winter's day in Lawrence, Kansas (24 F as I write this, with a projected high of 34 F), but in Austin, Texas it promises to be a much warmer (64F!) and cloudy day around the hot seat in Erwin Center as our Jayhawks go deep in the heart of Texas for another Kansas Big 12...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

Our Jayhawks (13-3, 3-1) and the Longhorns (12-4, 2-2) tip off at 1 p.m. (CT) on ESPN. Play-by-Play: Rich Hollenberg
Analyst: Fran Fraschilla

ESPN.com Game Preview: #6 Kansas versus Texas. ESPN's Basketball Power Index favors Kansas 75% to 25%, with an estimated 6 point winning margin.

Our lads from Lawrence wrangled the castrated bulls of Austin back into their pens last Saturday, only to return home to find a polecat infestation in the hallowed halls of Allen Fieldhouse for yet another Big 12 Conference Tuesday...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

6:00 PM CT on ESPN2, #3 KU (14-3, 4-1) hosts KSU (8-9, 1-4). Game voices will be Jon Sciambi (play-by-play) and Fran Fraschilla (analyst). ESPN+ subscribers, be sure to check out Jayhawk Gameday Live starting 30 minutes before and after the game.

The unranked Bramlage Bums are coming off a HUGE 84-68 home court win against Huggy Bear's #12 Mountaineers last Saturday, so you know they be screechin', wailin' and howlin' at the moon regarding the prospects of bringing an L to the Jayhawks in The Phog.

After two road games in a row (WIN, WIN!) for Ol' KU, this game is the first of two AFH games in a row, but only one -- KSU on Tuesday -- against a Big 12 foe. KU hosts Tennessee in this year's Big 12/Sec Challenge on Saturday (ESPN 3 PM CT).

The ESPN pregame matchup prediction favors KU over KSU by double digits, 95% to 5% probability KU wins.

Another Saturday day
Another cold winter's day
in Lawrence, Kansas of the USA.
The Volunteers play.
Another Barnes razing? Hey!
It's time to lace them up and go win on another......

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL DAY!!

Our Jayhawks (15-3, 5-1) and the Tennessee Volunteers of Rick Barnes (12-6, 4-2) take up the gauntlet for this season's edition of the annual Big 12/SEC Challenge. College Game Day will be on campus today. Game coverage begins at at 3 p.m. (CT) on ESPN. Dan Shulman (play-by-play), Jay Bilas (analyst) and Holly Rowe (reporter) will call the action.

ESPN.com Game Preview: #3 Kansas versus Tennessee. ESPN's Basketball Power Index favors Kansas 90.7% to 9.3%, with an estimated 13.5 point winning margin. That is one of the most favorable projections KU will see all year for a Power 5 foe! Are the Vols really down *that* much this season?

Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Bill,
Livin' in a Hawks' Nest high up on The Hill.
Took his charges south to his Ma & Pa's delight
For a Big Monday KANSAS game on a …

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

Alma mater.
Bal-Chatri.

[NB: Effective immediately, to easily differentiate OSUs – Oklahoma State from Ohio State (OHS) and Oregon State (ORS) – in acronym form, I will attempt to alter my Kansas lifetime habit and refer to them as OKS instead of OSU... and thank you USPS! HE]

8:00 PM CT on ESPN2* , #3 KU (16-3, 5-1) hosts OKS (10-9, 0-6). Game voices will be Bob Wischusen (play-by-play), Fran Fraschilla (analyst) and Kris Budden (reporter).

Both KANSAS and the unranked GIA Cowboys (that sounds like a fashion team, are they fashionable?; maybe Bayhawk can do a poll?) are coming off doing their parts to keep the Big 12/SEC Challenge a 5-5 tie this year with their respective Saturday defeats of Tennessee in AFH and yours truly's other school Texas A&M in Reed Arena. Baylor won @Florida, Oklahoma d. Miss St and West Virginia d. mOO. Big 12 and SEC teams won just 3 of 5 home games (W: KU, OU, WVU; Bama d. KSU, Ark d. TCU, Auburn d. ISU) but managed to garner 2 wins versus 3 losses on the road (W: BU, OKS; UK @TT and LSU @tu [Shaka not smart in loss – seriously!]).

CorpusJayhawk recently reminded us, but let me reinforce his point – of the 13 programs they have faced in his time as KUMBBHC, Bill Self's Jayhawks teams have losing conference road records in just two venues – WVU Coliseum (2-5, with wins in 2013 and 2018) and Gallagher-Iba Arena (5-7). KANSAS has won 2 of the last 3 games played in GIA (2017, 2019), but it will take a few more W's there before we can call that a true positive trend. And Big Dave's wings are still clipped for this one more game.

So we can count on OKS third year HC Mike Boynton reinforcing with his troops that GIA is their home and the Cowboys have been successful in defending it against Cowboy Bill's Raptor Invaders from the North.

The ESPN pregame matchup prediction has a 81% to 19% probability KU wins.

More fun stuff (sources as noted)...

Thanks, as always, for posting, HE.

I looked at the article you posted from the Lubbock paper (always nice to see the other team's/writer's take) and watched Chris Beard's post game press conference. Really enjoyed what he had to say and is a classy guy overall. For example, he mentioned that 2 of his top 8 players were injured, but wasn't going to make an excuse for that. He added (paraphrasing) that Kansas has had that situation a number of times, but still has found a way to win. We'd like to get to that point.

Some of us have pointed out that he's a stand-up guy and a good coach for our league, but I think it's worth noting again.

Here's a direct link to the 101 second clip of his press conference:

The stars at night may be big and bright,
But you're not in Texas anymore, it's a Phog...

... Buh duh DUH duh DUH DUH duh duh duh duh DUH DUH DUH ... BALL NIGHT!

8:00 PM CT on ESPN, #3 KU (18-3, 7-1) hosts the tu shorthorns of Shaka NS Smart (14-7, 4-4). Game voices will be Bob Wischusen (play-by-play), Jay Bilas (analyst) and Kris Budden (reporter).

KANSAS aims to keep pace with Baylor (while waiting to see if the undefeated in conference Bears hibernate a game or two) while people are wondering if the old tu coach will get to coach in the new tu arena under construction in Austin (a lovely town, if you haven't been there, it -- and nearby San Antonio -- is worth the trip)

The ESPN pregame matchup prediction favors KANSAS to win in AFH 94.4% to 5.6%, spread set at -14.5. Too high in my opinion, hope the Jayhawks play much better defense than their last outing and prove me wrong!

Bill Self's career win #699 (KU win #492) came as a result of a stifling second half defense by our Jim-dandy Jayhawks against the short horns of tu.

Can our hearty 'Hawks get him #700 at TCU on Saturday?
We sure don't ant any more YMCA games, I can tell ya that!

Here's some links for the tu game.

This piece was written before the game, so KU now is 53-12 (31-0 in AFH, 22-12 away) on Big Monday with the win against Texas. So far in 2020 wins against OKS and tu and still to come on Big Monday are
Mon Feb 17 Iowa State (AFH, 8 PM) and
Mon Feb 24 Oklahoma State (AFH, 8 PM).

I tried to find a link or two to a Texas media outlet post game story, but as has been noted bu others here, they don't seem to have a lot of interest. Could not find one postgame article yet*, and it's almost midnight as I write this post.

*One site had posted items dated today, but they were either looking ahead to Saturday against Texas Tech, or in once instance looking back at the win v ISU.

If like me you set your DVR to record ESPN tomorrow based on the earlier scheduling info we had, get up now and change your recording to ESPN2!

Same Jayhawk time, different Jayhawk channel!

And thanks to konza63 for bringing this to my attention!

ROCK CHALK!
