Non-athletes also live there, but the article says the five witnesses are all basket ball players.

First, let's just say that if it's true, it really doesn't matter whether the perpetrator is an athlete or just a run of the mill student. The real issue is the 16 year old victim, and that should be the #1 issue.

Secondarily, it does sound like guys on the team at least knew that the victim was there. Sounds like this may be a statutory rape case where the victim was underage, and provided drugs and alcohol. There's always the possibility that the girl claimed to be older, which I'm not sure would change the case any. Nevertheless, after the incident with Bragg earlier in the year, these guys have to figure out that they're in the national spotlight and that drugs, booze and casual sex can have bigtime repercussions.

Absolutely, everything pales to sexual assault. That said, with respect to the admins, there are a lot of girly, dating type ad banners...

Self addressed this further and more pointedly today with regard to any implication of a cover up to protect players or program.
Topeka Cap-Journal

Sounds like he was pretty...uh..."disappointed" with the line of questioning...

In response to a reporter’s question at a news conference about whether Self and others considered ways to communicate proactively about the incident to prevent any public perception of withholding information, Self replied: “I don’t know where you’re going, but I don’t like it.”

“There’s nobody withholding information at all,” he said. “If you wanted to discuss how it’s been handled, go to the Lawrence Police Department. That’s not our responsibility to report everything that the Lawrence Police Department does. And it’s not their responsibility, I don’t think, to report it, because they have certain things that they have to do to certainly follow their protocol. So no, nobody’s hiding behind this at all, and I kind of resent the fact that you would even hint at that.”

In the Topeka Cap-Journal article it said that the campus police were doing the investigation and that the Lawrence Police were not involved. Can't see why the local police would not be involved if a serious crime such as rape is alleged. Is it normal for local authorities to not be involved in a potential felony act?

State Police (UC and CSU systems) and therefore a "greater" agency than the local constable. Just my $0.02.

Fire up the WABAC machine:

In the middle seventies I got into a bit of a kerfuffle with a Sacramento State University Parking Enforcement Officer (details not important) only to be told she was part of the California State Police force and I best move my "Hippie ass" down the line . . .

Same here in Kansas. Officers affiliated with the campus Public Safety Office are commissioned state police.

Thanks for the trip back in time to a day in the life of a younger Bayhawk. Too funny. I envision mirrored sunglasses, chewing on a toothpick, and patting a baton while informing you to move along...

For clarification, the 5 basketball players were identified as "potential" witnesses, not necessarily eye-witnesses, and they were apparently not the only witnesses identified.
