I think we got a little screwed in the AP, but I also don't mind NOT being #1 this time of year. We don't need a bigger target on our backs, and nobody really cares who's #1 in mid-January.

Right now this is all about winning the Big 12. If we do that, the rest takes care of itself. Tonight will be a test, especially with ISU coming off a loss.

Here's the math: we need to win our home games and 4.5 road games. The 4.5 toughest teams right now are KU, WVU, Baylor, ISU, and OSU (according to Sagarin). The real contenders are KU, WVU and Baylor.

>KU is untested until tonight against the top teams, but haven't lost a road game to a lower end team.
>WVU's loss at Tech is significant because KU and Baylor should win there.
>Baylor's loss at WVU isn't that significant because the other top teams should lose there.

A win tonight helps our cause quite a bit. A loss doesn't kill us. In any case, ISU will be ready. Hope we are.

Villanova is 1st in AP with 1580 points and 28 1st place votes. KU actually had more 1st place votes but finished well behind with 1562 points (okay well behind is probably a bit dramatic). That means that the other 37 votes for Villanova averaged a ranking of 2.22 so likely about 29 votes for 2nd and maybe 8 for 3rd or something like that. The 33 votes for Kansas that did not vote for 1st averaged a ranking of 3.91. That means relatively few 2nd place votes and likely some votes as low as 5th or even 6th or 7th. To be fair, that is not unrealistic. The most accurate predictor in the land, otherwise known as the DPPI, has KU ranked 7th currently (albeit, it is a very tight race between 4th and 8th). Another rather odd fact is that currently 37 computers are compiled in the Massey Composite for this week (as many as 60 will eventually weigh in). 6 teams have a No. 1 ranking in at least 1 computer poll. KU is not among those 6. In fact only 1 computer ranks KU 2nd. The flip side is, KU's lowest ranking is 9th. KU easily (and by a good margin) has the lowest standard deviation of any school. I think the computers see us as a very consistently very good team but not yet showing the greatness to be No. 1. I fully agree. But I also have boundless hope that we will get there.

First, it takes a bit of the "polish" off of beating KU, from the ISU player and fan side of the motivation ledger. Not a lot, I admit, but a little, only because #1 has a much nicer ring to it (bragging rights and all) than beating #2.

Secondly, and more importantly, it might just grate at the KU players in that it could be seen as a slight or sign of disrespect, given that we've won 16 straight since that close opening loss.

This can only be a helpful thing, IMO, because the Hawks have not been playing their best for full games, to state the obvious fact. We have been perilously close to losses against teams that have no business beating us at home (KSU, OSU), and got some bounces or calls our way to help eke out those unnecessarily close wins.

The boys need a shot in the arse, in terms of motivation and energy, to propel them tonight--along with not having had recent success up there (which is a notable motivation for the likes of Frank and Devonte, per the press articles on same).

Hopefully these "mental" boosts, along with focused execution for the FULL game, will be enough to help us get the key W tonight. Doing so, as others have noted, would give us a nice leg up in the race for #13--which remains goal numero uno for the first phase of the season.

Ames is a tough place, and we need to be on our game at all spots. AND get some decent bench play for a change. Bragg, I'm looking at you!

Let's do this, Hawks!

Villanova is defending National Champ and have one stumble. They deserve to be #1 and I wish we were about #5 for reasons noted above.

Now the big question is whether North Carolina will defeat Syracuse quickly enough for our game not to be delayed.
