Tore ligaments in his wrist at practice, will need surgery. Damn, was really enjoying watching this kid!

Guess the other bigs are really going to have to step up now.

what a bad break for these guys. Particularly Landen and Frank as this is their last chance to win it all. Hopefully the other bigs can rally around this and step their games up

OMG!!!! Damn squared factorial. This is a major blow. Not a death blow but a very significant blow. Okay, Mr. Lightfoot and Mr. Coleby. Be prepared to improve rapidly.

Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!

I really believe that if healthy, Coleby could step up from a power standpoint. From a speed standpoint, I like seeing Lightfoot getting more minutes. There will be an adjustment period, but I honestly think it can be ok.

First, that stinks. I fell terrible for the kid and was really hoping to see him play this year. That being said, if this is our "big hit" this year (and I hope it is) it's 1000x better than a kid being kicked off the team for something criminal, a career ending injury, or some kind of scandal that impacts the program in a bigger way (i.e. eligibility). So I feel terrible for Dok.

Nevertheless, there's a lot of silver lining here, so I'll focus on that:
  • He's only 17, which means that he's still likely got 2 years at KU before he can go pro (19 year old or higher to enter draft)
  • He'll get a full year of Coach Hudy. So he's got a bad wrist: there's still a LOT he can do in the gym, and his odds of further injury in the weight room are pretty slim.
  • He may be eligible for a medical redshirt, so in the off chance that he'd stay 4 years, he may not lose a year of elgibility*
  • He'll have a year of "learning" how to play ball. Rumor is he started playing in 9th grade, so he's got about 4 years of experience under his belt. Getting to learn at the highest level for a year won't hurt him a bit.
  • Depending on which wrist it is, he MIGHT be able to spend some serious time shooting free throws with his healthy hand. :)

*Regarding the medical redshirt, I think we all predict that he'll be gone before his 4 years are up. Nevertheless, here's what I found online on the subject. The way I read it, if he's played less than 30 of the season, he might qualify. Again, it might be a moot point, but with 30+ games in the season, and considering how deep we MIGHT go in the post-season, I would think you could make the argument that he's under the line. Then again, we've played 11 games out of a 32 game regular season (33 games since we're guaranteed 1 game in the Big 12 tourney), so he's over 30%. BUT, if you count in actual games an we play 3 game in the Big 12 tourney that gets us to 35 games and we'd only need 1 game in the NCAA tourney to get to the 36 needed.

Found this link: Informed Athlete Site - Medical Redshirt

From the link: NCAA Division I – An athlete must not have participated in more than three contests or 30 percent of their season schedule (whichever is greater) and not after the halfway point of the season (based on the number of contests rather than a particular date).

i love the positive thinking not o. to add one more silver lining its clear from last year and to some extent this that landon plays better when we need him to. or said another way when hes secure in his minutes and not looking over his shoulder to earn his playing time. plus bragg having survived a near death experience looks ready to step up. and i too like coleby and lightfoot playing clean up/ foul trouble minutes. we shld be able to win with these four bigs given how good our five guards are. and btw udoka broke his LEFT wrist so in addition to conditioning, weights, and film work he shld be able to shoot a ton of free throws. given his attitude and relative inexperience he shld be a beast next year.

Landon reeled in 12 of the 45 total rebounds KU had last night, including those 3 consecutive O-rebounds that eventually ended with Frank driving and getting hacked.

Only 4 points and a couple of missed chippies, but while not a perfect game, he was solid, played good defense, and stayed out of foul trouble for the most part.

Bragg still has work to do, but is coming along. While I like Coleby and Lightfoot, they're currently an order of magnitude below the other 2.

We'd certainly be better with Azubuike in the rotation, but we can survive without him. Lucas' earlier injury issue seems to have passed (I'm surprised).

Good to know about the left wrist. Yes, there's no reason that Dok shouldn't be dialed in from the charity stripe come next year.
