Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!
REBOUNDING: CLearly KU is responding to the poor rebounding in game 1. KU grabbed 60% of the rebounds against Siena. They were merely adequate on the defensive boards but dominated the offensive boards grabbing 44.4%. That is domination. For the season to date we are still below goal of 35% on offense and 70% on defense and 54% overall. We will get there. These guys are getting in the rebounding groove.
SHOOTING: We continue to be a bi-polar shooting team. We are really doing well at 2 pointers (60% on the season) but very poorly from the arc (23% for the season). And we are down to 67.5% on FT's after hitting 80% against Indiana. But since we are so good inside the arc our SE is 55.6% The ideal goal for SE is 57% or above for the season and 60% in a game. I would think given the track record that we will come around in three pointers.
OPPONENT SHOOTING: Siena shot 44.8% SE. The goal is 45% in a game and 47.5% for the season. So we did well against Siena. They still hit 38.1% from the arc which is not good for KU defense. Fortunately we dominated inside the arc where they shot 36%. For the season we are allowing a 3pt FG% of 41.7%. We clearly need to tighten this up. This is probably the top issue currently for the Jayhawks.
SHOT SELECTION: We really backed off of shooting the 3 pointer against Siena. We shot only 20% of our shots from the arc. That is 33% less than the norm (30%). For the season we are scoring 65% of our points from 2 point FG's. That is by far the highest for a Bill Self team. I do not expect that to remain there. But it is nice to know that if our 3 pointers are not falling we have a strong short and mid range game.
OPPONENT SHOT SELECTION: Siena had that big guy who was hot early and they kept going to him. They shot only 30% of their shots ifrom the arc. I think that may have been a mistake since we started shutting them down inside. They scored only 10.8% of their points from the FT line. That is incredibly low. Great job by the Jayhawks of adjusting to the refs.
BALL HANDLING: KU continues to be efficient with the ball. They had a 17.1% LoB which is not great but it is decent. We had an Assist/TO ratio of 1.58 which is excellent. For the season we have a %LoB of 15.9% which would be clearly the best under Self and better than any year under Williams or Brown. Nice job guys.
POSSESSIONS: KU had a very strong PPP of 1.23. You will win just about every game with a PPP of 1.23. SIena had a PPP of 0.93 which is okay at best. In Self's first 10 years our opponents had a PPP of 0.913. In the last three years it has been 0.980. That equates to about 5 points per game. KU's offense has improved in the last 3 years compared to the first 10 but by only 0.5 points per game. FWIW, KU is playing at a much faster pace thus far this season. In the first 13 seasons under Self the average possessions per game was 69.4. This season it is 77.7 or more than 10% faster pace.
