KU ran into the eventual NC in the Elite Eight, lost a winnable game, and watched as the team that defeated them went on to the NC. 1997 and 2016.

KU lost in Sweet 16 in 97, but nonetheless same outcome a team named the Wildcats wins the NC. Another similarity is NC in '97 and '16 beat KU and then two games later beats UNC.

It's similar in that KU lost to the eventual champs in both cases. But the Zona loss was in a Sweet 16 game, not an Elite 8. And Zona was a 4 seed no one saw coming that caught lightning in a bottle. Nova was a 1 seed in my book, and in the top 4 in KenPom all the way down the stretch. KU got shafted by drawing them as the 2 seed, but we so often have some bitter angle to contend with at this time of the year.

The only "sweet" part is seeing a program that systematically cheated in academics for over 18 years, and gained 2 illegitimate crowns during that time, be denied a third. And to be denied with the kind of gut-wrenching heartbreak KU teams and their fans have had to suffer through many times over the years in the tourney.

“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”

1936 inscription on the portrait of Dr. Naismith, displayed above Phog Allen's office desk at KU.

I often say, "All's well that ends." Seems to apply to this season.

And, absolutely NOVA was not the 8th best team going into the NCAA, even if they dumped their conference tournament.

I did not see them play the first weekend, but after that they played four really strong games. A more accurate seeding and we get them in Houston.

So it goes.
