Congrats to a solid coach and (from all appearances) great guy.
As I said prior to the tourney, you would have to believe that Self would be next in line. I also think he would've had a shot at entry this time around if he'd made the FF and/or NC game.
Clearly his post-season record is holding him back at this juncture, because if you take away FF appearances, everything else on his resume either equals or surpasses that of Izzo:
(NC crowns)
Izzo: 1
Self:1
(NC game appearances)
Izzo: 2
Self: 2
(FF appearances)
Izzo: 7
Self: 2
(Cumulative head coaching wins)
Izzo: 524
Self: 592
(Cumulative head coaching winning percentage)
Izzo: .718 (524-205)
Self: .759 (592-188)
(Regular season league championships, entire coaching tenure)
Izzo: 7
Self: 16

Don't worry about the mules, just load the wagon!!
Scanning your data, the ONLY thing that Izzo has on Self is Final Four's. Can it really be that that is that big of a factor? Apparently so because what else could it be when Self has the edge in all other metrics. Curious!!

It can't be anything other than his FF appearances. He has only 1 crown and that was almost 2 decades ago.
As for Self, he needed a FF or perhaps an NC game berth this year, IMO, to get a sniff. But perhaps in the eyes of the voters he needs more--another crown? Or perhaps he's getting dinged for succeeding in the Big 12, which aside from KU can't do anything elite in the tourney.
It's definitely a disparity (with Izzo), but Izzo's tourney rep nationally is quite robust. The irony is his rep doesn't match his actual performance, unless people get trophies for Final Fours. If Tom hadn't gotten the one crown, his tenure at MSU would be very much like Roy's at KU (except many years longer)--lots of deep runs, but no glory. And Roy was the Marv Levy of college hoops when he was at KU.
If and when Self gets crown #2, hopefully along side 13+ straight league titles, that should seal the deal.

BLUF (or TLDR for the text set): Actually, it could be that (1) Self does not yet meet the eligibility requirements for consideration, or (2) nobody realized he was eligible and so did not nominate him (if this, it is a MAJOR faux pas by the KUAD), or (3) it could be that the additional FFs did make the difference for Izzo.
ELIGIBILITY
Coach: A coach must be either fully retired for four full seasons or, if still an active coach, have coached as either a fulltime assistant or head coach on the high school and/or college and/or professional level for a minimum of 25 years. That person will then be considered for Enshrinement in the fifth year of retirement or 26th year of active coaching. -- from Guidelines For Nomination and Election Into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
Reading that, it seems to me that years spent as a full-time assistant coach are combined with years spent as a head coach in order to meet the 25 year requirement for an active coach.
SELF COACHING CAREER
1985-1986 Kansas (Asst) (KU time was as a grad assistant, so does not count.)( Was he full-time at OSU?)
1986–1993 Oklahoma State (Asst.) (Was he not full-time at OSU?)
1993–1997 Oral Roberts
1997–2000 Tulsa
2000–2003 Illinois
2003–present Kansas
TOTAL: HC 23 years, FTAC (if OSU counts) + HC = 30 years
IZZO COACHING CAREER
1977–1978 Ishpeming HS
1979–1983 Northern Michigan (assistant)
1983–1995 Michigan State (assistant)
1995–present Michigan State
TOTAL: HC 21 College, 2 HS; FTAC + HC = 39 years assuming he was FT at NMU and MSU
Given that Izzo was selected this year (i.e., he met the eligibility requirements so he could be nominated, he was nominated and he was selected), Self should already be eligible as well UNLESS he was not a fulltime assistant at OSU.
So again, the options "why Izzo and not Self" come down to:
1. Self was not a FT AC at OSU, so he is not yet eligible, OR
2. Self is eligible, but no one at the KUAD realized this and so did not nominate him, OR
3. Self *was* nominated, and yes, 7 FFs versus 2 FFs is a significant difference, despite all the other aspects in the head-to-head comparison clearly favoring Self.
Anyone know if Self was nominated?
