As you must already know, The Foul Orange Cheaters are in the Final 4. I cannot imagine what the satire community will make of a game between UNC and TOC. What headlines. What potential for standup comedy. How embarrassing for college basketball and sports in general. Amazing.

But that is not the point of this post. I just got off the phone with my 'secret' friend who earns his salary from an NBA team, and he had several interesting comments about the draft and yesterday's 'game.'

First he said that Selden is not ready. It's unlikely that anyone will take a chance on him in the 1st round, and he almost definitely won't get a contract if he gets drafted in the 2nd round. He's likely going to go overseas if he leaves, and given the game they play, he's going to stay there for a long time, maybe forever. If, however, he stays and learns how to drive left and improves his flexibility, he may end up in the NBA. He has the athleticism, length, strength, and shot, but he is not quick and isn't quite good enough a shooter to make it as a specialist. My friend believes that Self will get him ready with another season of work, so it's his view that we'll have Selden back.

Diallo is a crap-shoot. He's clearly not going to make a team next year, but he MIGHT get a contract because he has so much upside. He's got everything the NBA looks for other than the ability to actually play basketball. His feeling is that one of 3 teams will take him in the 1st round IF their first choice pick is off the board. He gives Diallo about a 30% chance of getting a contract, and a 70% chance of playing overseas next year. But he is hearing nothing but 'I'm out of here' from the Diallo camp, so don't count on seeing him next year.

Sadly, the word on Perry is not good. He's not going to get drafted in the 1st round, and is not going to get a contract unless he blows up in the camps and the summer workouts. He's a lock for overseas, where he'll make a very nice living for a decade or more. Yesterday really hurt him because he seemed passive at a time when he had to be aggressive, and that has been his issue for all 4 years at KU.

My friend said that our guards were a major cause of the loss, primarily because they didn't force the ball into Perry when he was open. Whether or not they could see him is still unclear, but the general feeling is that Self did not get the players to execute his offense consistently, and that his 'tightness' was a factor in the players being tight as well.

He likes Self and although he is viewed as a 'system' coach, with players who are smart and execute his system, he's the best. Very interesting that he feels that Mason is a terrific player, but not a PG, and that Graham is a terrific player, but not a PG either. His feeling is that Self needs someone like Aaron Miles or Sherron Collins again, and that his 3rd guard should be a PG backup, not another combo.

Adios for now.
