The ACC is 12-1 at present in the Dance, with a record six teams in the Sweet 16. (Blecccch)

Naturally the media loves this, and is busy licking the ACC's boots.

Self was asked about it and gave a thoughtful response:

Filed in the "for what it's worth" category...

“With kindest regards to Dr. Forrest C. Allen, the father of basketball coaching, from the father of the game.”

An article from Yahoo states:

While the ACC deserves credit for setting a record and advancing so many teams, it should be noted that those six teams have combined to beat two No. 16 seeds, a No. 15, two 14s, a 13, a 12, two 11s, two 9s and one 7 seed.

But follows up with:

So a case could be made that the ACC teams have traveled an easy road thus far, but one can also point out that teams earn their seeding throughout the year. Every team and coach in America wants a better seed in order to have the best chance to win at this time of year. You can’t fault the ACC for earning those seeds and then beating lower seeded teams. That’s the way the system is supposed to work.

In the end, I think you have to give some credit to the ACC. They got 6 out of their 7 tourney teams to the Sweet 16 (not Pitt) while the Big 12 got 3 out of 7. Now if KU, Okla, and ISU all make the Final 4, that'll give the Big 12 some bragging rights, although I think Virginia's D presents a tough matchup for ISU and will wind up ousting them (but that's for another thread).

i am certainly no fan of the acc, whose newest version was obvi constructed for basketball, so in some ways why be surprised. having said that based on only on the court play louisville shld probably also be in the sweet sixteen. hard to deny 7 teams from one conf in the top 16 isnt special. my dream however continues to be the three big 12 teams plus unc in the final four with us repeating 1988 ( a game early) by taking out okla in the semis and then playing two first halves from 2008 against unc in the final. oh that wld be nice. that first half of the 2008 semifinal vs unc was my favorite 20 mins of basketball ever, topped off memorably by roy wearing a jayhawk sticker monday night.

My dream would be 3 Big 12 teams plus Indiana in the FF. No ACC teams at all, and no UNC keeping pace with KU in all-time wins.

KU has faced IU in the NC twice in tournament history, and both times (1940, 1953) lost to Branch McCracken's Hoosiers. I would love to see KU finally top them for all the marbles.

But that is putting the wagon before the mules, as Corpus might say.
The focus for now is Maryland.

Get 'er done, Jayhawks!
